Scotland Awards £3.4m to Boost Domestic Hydrogen Projects Across the Nation

Scotland has allocated £3.4 million in public funding to 11 hydrogen infrastructure projects, supporting a nationwide push to scale up green hydrogen production, storage, and transport in line with its Net Zero 2045 goals.

The funding—roughly $4.5 million USD—was awarded to a mix of feasibility studies and full-scale developments, with several high-profile companies among the beneficiaries. The largest single grant went to Green Cat Hydrogen for its Creca Hydrogen Facility in Dumfries and Galloway, which received £490,088. The plant, located beside the decommissioned Chapelcross nuclear site, is expected to produce over 4,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

“Hydrogen stands as a critical pillar of Scotland’s route to Net Zero by 2045, but also as one of Scotland’s greatest industrial opportunities since the discovery of oil and gas in the North Sea,” said Gillian Martin, Acting Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero.

“We are working to build a hydrogen economy in which the benefits of our energy transition are shared, and which harnesses the full potential of our skilled people, our world-class industries, and our natural resources,” she added.

The Scottish Government has placed green hydrogen at the heart of its transition strategy away from fossil fuels. These 11 projects are expected to accelerate the domestic supply chain, enhance storage and transport capabilities, and open new employment opportunities in both urban centers and remote regions like the Highlands, Islands, and Shetland.

Among the notable developments:

  • Protium’s Hydrogen Island in South Lanarkshire, aimed at integrating hydrogen into local grids and industry.

  • Storegga’s Cromarty Hydrogen Phase 2, expanding its reach across Highland locations.

  • European Marine Energy Centre’s Orkney initiative, tying hydrogen production to renewable marine power sources.

Green Cat Hydrogen’s sweep of three projects—Creca, Strathallan, and Binn Ecopark—underscores the firm’s growing dominance in Scotland’s hydrogen rollout.
