A major police operation unfolded on Monday morning after reports of a man carrying a firearm prompted the temporary closure of Scotland’s busiest motorway, the M8. The incident, which occurred near Chapelhall, North Lanarkshire, during the busy rush hour, caused significant disruption to traffic.
The Incident and Arrest
Specialist officers were swiftly deployed to the scene at junction six of the M8, where initial reports indicated that a man was seen with a gun on a slip road. By the time police arrived, the man had fled on foot. Despite his escape, officers were able to recover a firearm in the area shortly after their arrival.
A 35-year-old man was later arrested in connection with the incident. Police have indicated that the event is believed to be a targeted incident, with investigations following a promising lead.
Traffic Disruptions
As a result of the operation, the M8 eastbound was temporarily closed, leading to major delays. The slip road at junction six, along with part of the A8 eastbound at Eurocentral, remained shut for approximately seven hours. The closure disrupted the morning commute for many drivers, particularly those heading towards Glasgow.
Police Appeal for Information
Detective Inspector Stephanie Bertram, leading the investigation, urged any motorists who were on the road at the time of the incident to come forward. “We believe this was a targeted incident, and we are following a positive line of enquiry,” she said. “I would ask any drivers with dash-cams to please check their footage and contact us.”
Officers have already spoken to several motorists who stopped during the incident, and they continue to seek additional information to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the event.
The road was eventually reopened, and police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
