Ithaca College students have a rare chance to experience Edinburgh, Scotland, in August 2025. The long-standing short-term study abroad program, organized by the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, is open to students from all disciplines. Applications are due by February 15, and spots are expected to fill up fast.
Why Edinburgh? Why August?
August in Edinburgh isn’t just another summer month—it’s festival season. The city transforms into a cultural hub, drawing visitors from around the world. The renowned Edinburgh International Festival showcases top-tier theatre, opera, dance, and music. What started in 1947 as an invite-only event quickly grew when independent artists began staging their own performances. This led to the creation of the Fringe Festival, now the largest arts festival in the world.
But that’s not all. The Edinburgh Book Festival, established in 1983, hosts globally recognized authors and speakers. Scotland’s premier visual arts celebration, the Edinburgh Art Festival, has been a highlight since 2004. With so much happening at once, August is truly the best time to visit this historic city.
Program Details: Dates, Itinerary, and Costs
The 2025 program runs from August 14 to August 19. Students will depart from a New York City airport on the evening of August 14, arriving in London the next morning. From there, they will take a scenic train ride to Edinburgh.
Once in Edinburgh, students will spend three days immersing themselves in the city’s rich culture and history. The itinerary includes:
- Open-top bus tours covering major sights
- Walking tours through the city’s historic districts
- Visits to Edinburgh Castle and top museums
- Attendance at festival performances and events
For those who enjoy the outdoors, there will be chances to hike Arthur’s Seat, walk the famous Royal Mile, and take in panoramic views from Calton Hill. And of course, no trip to Scotland would be complete without trying local specialties like haggis and deep-fried Mars bars.
On August 19, students will travel back to London. Those not continuing with the Fall 2025 semester in London have the option to return home immediately or extend their stay for independent travel before classes resume in Ithaca on August 25.
The program fee is $1,100, which covers lodging, breakfast, round-trip transportation from London to Edinburgh, and travel insurance. Airfare and personal expenses—such as meals, entertainment, and festival tickets—are not included. Students choosing to stay in London post-program will need to budget for additional accommodation and expenses.
