ABERDEENSHIRE, Scotland — Former U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to visit Scotland next year for the grand opening of a new golf course at the Trump International resort in Menie, Aberdeenshire. The visit, confirmed by his son Eric Trump, would mark his first return to Scotland since winning the 2024 U.S. Presidential election.
A New Addition to the Resort
The MacLeod Course, named after Trump’s late mother, Mary MacLeod, is an 18-hole links course built alongside the original 2012 course. The project has been touted by Trump International as one of the “most environmentally friendly and sustainable” courses ever constructed. However, the site has previously faced criticism, particularly after the Menie dunes lost their status as a protected national environment.
Eric Trump emphasized the family’s emotional connection to Scotland, stating, “Our love for this country keeps us investing here despite challenges.”
Controversy Surrounding Trump’s Visits
Trump’s previous visits to Scotland have often been met with public demonstrations and political tension:
- 2018 Visit: During his time as U.S. President, Trump faced mass protests and security operations. Demonstrators booed him as he played golf at Turnberry, while a paraglider flew over the resort with a banner critical of his presidency.
- Environmental Concerns: The construction of Trump’s golf courses has long been controversial, with critics accusing the developments of harming Scotland’s natural landscapes.
Scottish Greens have previously voiced opposition, stating that Trump and his ventures are “not welcome in Aberdeenshire.”
Eric Trump Criticizes Scottish Government
Eric Trump expressed frustration over what he described as excessive bureaucracy, regulations, and taxation imposed by the Scottish government, claiming it has made business operations “virtually impossible.”
He also criticized comments made by Scottish First Minister John Swinney, who endorsed Kamala Harris during the U.S. election. Eric suggested such actions could have repercussions for Scotland’s trade relations, particularly regarding tariffs.
“The USA is Scotland’s most important market,” a Scottish government spokesperson responded, affirming their commitment to fostering strong economic ties with the U.S.
Looking Ahead
The new course is scheduled to open in summer 2025, with Trump’s visit anticipated as a high-profile event. The MacLeod Course aims to cement the Trump resort as a premier destination for golf enthusiasts, despite its contentious history in Scotland.
