Claude AI Finally Gets Rupee Pricing in India, Still Costs More Than Rivals

Anthropic now bills Claude Pro, Max and Team plans in Indian rupees with GST included, though the chatbot still costs more than ChatGPT Plus and Gemini AI Pro.

Anthropic began pricing Claude AI in Indian rupees on July 13, ending over a year as the only major chatbot billing India in dollars. Claude Pro now starts near Rs 2,000 a month under annual billing, with Max and Team plans getting matching rupee tags, all inclusive of GST.

The change removes the forex markup and separate tax line that had made Claude quietly one of the more expensive subscriptions an Indian professional could buy. It does not, however, make Claude the cheapest option on the table. ChatGPT Plus and Gemini AI Pro still cost less, and both arrived in rupees months earlier.

Claude Pro Now Costs Rs 2,000 a Month in India

Anthropic’s new India pricing covers Claude Pro, Claude Max and Claude Team, while the free tier stays exactly as it was. Pro subscribers on annual billing pay Rs 2,000 a month, billed as Rs 24,000 upfront for the year, or Rs 2,399 a month on a rolling monthly plan, roughly $21 at recent exchange-rate estimates for the rupee.

Pro includes default access to Sonnet 5 plus Opus and Fable 5, five times the usage ceiling of the free plan, Research mode, unlimited Projects, Memory, web search, file uploads, voice mode, Claude Code and Claude Design, along with Microsoft 365 integration for Excel and PowerPoint. The free plan keeps Sonnet 5, Sonnet 4.6 and Haiku 4.5, web search, limited Projects and uploads capped at 20 files per chat.

Plan Price in India
Claude Pro (annual billing) Rs 2,000/month (Rs 24,000/year)
Claude Pro (monthly billing) Rs 2,399/month
Claude Max 5x Rs 11,999/month
Claude Max 20x Rs 23,999/month
Claude Team Standard Rs 2,399/user/month (annual) or Rs 2,999/user/month (monthly)
Claude Team Premium Rs 11,999/user/month (annual) or Rs 14,999/user/month (monthly)

Team plans add a 200K context window, API usage credits, centralised billing, single sign on and domain capture, along with the Cowork tool Anthropic recently folded into Claude Chat. Anthropic says content from Team customers is not used to train its models by default.

Why Rupee Pricing Took This Long

Until this week, Anthropic billed every Indian user in US dollars. A card payment triggered a 2 to 3 percent forex conversion fee from the issuing bank, then an 18 percent GST charge on top, arriving as a separate line on the statement rather than at checkout. Industry pricing guides had pegged the real cost of Claude Pro at Rs 2,200 to Rs 2,400 a month under that system, well above the sticker price Anthropic advertised globally.

Indian developers had been asking for a fix in public. One contributor on Anthropic’s own Claude Code repository wrote that India-specific pricing plans in INR were needed to match what OpenAI and Google already offered, and argued localized pricing tends to lift adoption sharply in emerging markets. A separate, more pointed thread put it plainly: “Claude is the best AI assistant I have used.” The same post went on to argue that being the best doesn’t win a price-sensitive market on its own.

OpenAI and Google had already moved. Both introduced India-specific pricing in rupees with local payment options well before Anthropic followed, leaving Claude as the odd one out for months.

Claude Pro Against ChatGPT Plus and Gemini AI Pro

Even with rupees now on the invoice, Claude remains the pricier mainstream subscription in India. Here is where the three main paid tiers land this month:

  • ChatGPT Plus costs Rs 1,999 a month, OpenAI’s mainstream tier with the widest feature set.
  • Gemini AI Pro costs Rs 1,950 a month and bundles 2TB of storage plus Veo video generation.
  • ChatGPT Go, OpenAI’s budget tier, lists at Rs 399 a month and has been offered free for a year to Indian users since November 2025.
  • Claude Pro costs Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,399 a month depending on billing cycle, still the most expensive of the four.

Reliance Jio has also bundled free Gemini AI Pro access for younger subscribers on qualifying plans, and Airtel ran a comparable Perplexity Pro promotion for a stretch. Anthropic has not matched either move; the rupee prices announced this week are straight subscription rates with no telecom bundle attached.

India’s Usage Boom Outran Its Revenue

The pricing gap mattered because of how large India already looms for Claude. Anthropic’s own economic index found India generated 5.8% of all Claude.ai conversations in November 2025, second only to the United States, with usage skewed heavily toward professional and coding work rather than casual chat.

Yet spending never matched that usage. Claude app downloads in India jumped 48% year over year in September, reaching about 767,000 installs, but consumer spending on the app that month totaled just $195,000 against $2.5 million in the United States, according to data from Appfigures reported by TechCrunch.

  • 5.8% of global Claude.ai conversations came from India in November 2025, per Anthropic’s economic index.
  • 48% year-over-year growth in Indian Claude app downloads in September.
  • $195,000 in Indian consumer spending that month, versus $2.5 million in the US.
  • Coding accounts for more than half of all Claude use in India, versus roughly a third worldwide.

That combination, a huge and growing user base paired with thin consumer revenue, is the gap Anthropic’s India country brief on Claude.ai use was built to measure, and it is the gap rupee pricing is aimed squarely at closing.

The Bengaluru Bet Behind the Price Cut

The pricing update lands months after Anthropic opened a Bengaluru office, its second in Asia Pacific after Tokyo, and appointed Irina Ghose, a 24-year Microsoft veteran and former Microsoft India managing director, to run the market.

India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just concentrated pockets.

Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s co-founder and chief executive, said that in the company’s announcement of its India expansion. He visited the country twice in the space of a year, meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and corporate leaders as the office push accelerated.

Anthropic says its India run-rate revenue has doubled since that October 2025 expansion announcement, with enterprise customers including Air India, CRED, Cognizant and Razorpay building on Claude. The company is not the only one spending heavily to win the market: Microsoft has committed its own multibillion-dollar AI infrastructure raise to fund the capex race behind Google’s Indian push, while Anthropic leans on cloud partners rather than a dedicated Indian data centre. Anthropic separately struck a partnership with Infosys, whose shares moved on the announcement even as the broader Nifty IT index has swung on fears that AI tools erode outsourced software revenue.

Anthropic’s push has not been friction-free. A Delhi-based firm called Anthropic Software already held the Anthropic name in India, a trademark snag that reportedly slowed elements of the company’s local rollout even as the broader expansion continued.

Is Claude Pro Still Worth It in India?

Rupee pricing removes the forex fee and the buried GST line that once pushed Claude Pro’s real cost to Rs 2,200 or more a month. It does not close the gap with ChatGPT Plus or Gemini AI Pro, both of which remain cheaper on paper and come with free-tier promotions Anthropic has not matched.

The people most likely to keep paying are the ones already using Claude for coding and long documents, the exact profile Anthropic’s own usage data says dominates the Indian base. Casual users chasing the lowest rupee price still have cheaper options elsewhere.

Claude’s unchanged free plan, still built on Sonnet 5, Sonnet 4.6 and Haiku 4.5, remains the actual entry point for most of an estimated 2.1 million Claude website users in India tracked by analytics firm Demandsage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Claude Pro cost in India now?

Claude Pro costs Rs 2,000 a month when billed annually (Rs 24,000 a year) or Rs 2,399 a month on a rolling monthly plan, with GST already included in both figures rather than added afterward.

Is Claude Pro cheaper than ChatGPT Plus in India?

No. ChatGPT Plus lists at Rs 1,999 a month, roughly Rs 400 less than Claude Pro’s monthly rate and close to Claude’s annual-billing rate, so Claude still carries a small premium either way.

Does the new Claude pricing include GST?

Yes. Anthropic says every listed India price for Pro, Max and Team is inclusive of GST, unlike the old system where 18 percent GST showed up as a separate charge on the cardholder’s statement.

What do Claude Max plans add over Pro?

Max 5x and Max 20x, priced at Rs 11,999 and Rs 23,999 a month, include the same models and tools as Pro but with a much larger usage allowance, priority access during peak demand, longer Claude Code sessions and early access to new models before Pro users get them.

Is Claude’s free plan changing in India?

No. The free plan still includes Sonnet 5, Sonnet 4.6 and Haiku 4.5, web search and limited Projects, with uploads capped at 20 files per chat, unchanged by this pricing update.

Does Claude Team keep company data private?

Anthropic says that, by default, content from Claude Team customers is not used to train its AI models, a distinction the company positions against rivals whose consumer tiers train on chats unless users opt out.
