One address, read by people

Every message to Cumbernauld Media goes to support@cumbernauld-media.com. It is the only address we publish and the only one we reply from. It is read and sorted by our own editors, and because our readers are spread across every time zone it is checked around the clock rather than during one country’s office hours.

If you receive mail claiming to be from us that comes from any other address, treat it as suspect and forward it to us. We use no other domains, and we never ask readers for payment details or passwords by email.

Put the purpose first

Start the subject line with one word that says what the message is: CORRECTION, TIP, CONFIDENTIAL, PITCH, ADVERTISING, PRIVACY, LEGAL or PERMISSIONS. That word is how the message gets routed. If your message concerns a specific story, paste the link rather than the headline. Headlines get rewritten; links stay put.

Corrections and complaints

If we have published something factually wrong, write with CORRECTION in the subject, include the link, and quote the sentence or figure you dispute. Scores, dates, currencies, unit conversions, percentage bases, the spelling of names and the titles of officials are what we get wrong most often and most want to hear about. If you have the record, ruling, paper or announcement that shows the correct version, attach it or tell us where to find it.

Complaints about framing, a headline you consider unfair, or an image you think should not have been used go to the same address. They are read by an editor who was not involved in the story wherever that is possible. If you want a reply rather than a change, say so and you will get one.

Tips

Tips are why a newsroom exists. A memo that contradicts the public line, a recall that has not been announced yet, a fixture moved for reasons nobody has explained, a study quietly withdrawn, a contract that does not match the announcement, a fare rule that penalises passengers in a way the airline has not disclosed: send it, and tell us how you came to see it. A copy of the document is worth far more than a description of it.

We read every tip. We cannot follow up on every one, and we will never publish on the strength of a tip alone. What a tip does is tell us where to look.

Sending something confidential

If sending us material could put your job, your visa, your contract, your place on a team or your safety at risk, protect yourself first. Write from a personal account on a personal device, never from a work or team system, and never from a network your employer controls. Make CONFIDENTIAL the first word of the subject line so the message is handled that way from the moment it lands. Do not put the sensitive material in that first message. We will reply to agree a safer channel before you send anything that could identify you.

We do not identify sources to anyone: not to advertisers, lawyers, clubs, studios, governments or the companies they work for. If we cannot protect you, we say so before you send, not after.

Pitches, press releases and review material

Freelance pitches are welcome, especially from people with real knowledge of a region, a sport, a field of research or an industry we cannot cover well from a desk. Two or three paragraphs is enough: what the story is, who you can talk to, what documents exist and how long it will take. We pay for accepted work and tell you the rate before you start.

Press releases should be pasted as plain text in the body of the message. We do not open unsolicited attachments from addresses we do not recognise. Offers of review units, press tickets, travel, early access and embargoed material go to the same address and are handled under the rules on the editorial standards page. A release is one source among several, never a finished story.

Advertising

Advertising inquiries carry ADVERTISING in the subject. The advertise page describes what we run, what we refuse, and why we do not sell sponsored posts, link insertions or guest posts. Advertising mail is handled apart from editorial mail, and nothing said in a sales conversation reaches the people who write and edit stories.

Privacy, legal and copyright

Requests to access, correct or delete personal data, questions about cookies, and requests under any privacy law carry PRIVACY in the subject. Copyright notices should follow the format on the DMCA page and carry LEGAL. Formal legal correspondence also comes to this address; we confirm receipt and, where a service address, governing law or registered details are legally required, we confirm them in writing in reply.

What this inbox is not

We are a newsroom, not a customer service desk for the organisations we cover. We cannot refund your ticket, rebook your flight, trace your parcel, restore your game account or reach a company’s support team on your behalf. Their own channels will get you there faster. What we can do is find out why a system is failing many people at once, so if your problem is one that others are also having, tell us that and tell us how you know.

Response times

Corrections are acknowledged the same day and usually resolved within hours. Tips get a reply when we have a question or when a story results. Pitches are answered within a week. Privacy and legal requests are acknowledged within two business days. If you have waited longer, write again with the original subject line; a sorting failure is far more likely than a decision to ignore you.
