South Korea’s offshore wind energy ambitions took a major leap forward as the Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 project delivered its first power ahead of full-scale commercial operations slated for 2025. The 96 MW wind farm, located off the coast of Shin-an, marks a significant milestone as the country’s first commercial-scale offshore wind project.
A Collaboration of Global and Local Partners
Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 is the product of a joint venture involving:
- Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), via its Copenhagen Infrastructure III (CI III) fund.
- SK Innovation E&S, one of South Korea’s leading conglomerates.
- Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP), CIP’s exclusive offshore wind development partner.
Construction on the project began in early 2023, with the installation of wind turbines completed in September 2024.
Powering Thousands of Homes
Once fully operational in Q1 2025, Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 will generate enough electricity to power approximately 60,000 households, contributing to South Korea’s renewable energy goals.
The project has significantly supported local communities and industries by utilizing Korean suppliers, ports, and construction facilities.
Commitment to Renewable Energy Goals
South Korea has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and has set ambitious offshore wind targets of 14.3 GW by 2030. Jeonnam 1 plays a vital role in advancing these objectives by showcasing the feasibility and benefits of offshore wind energy.
CIP has been active in the South Korean market since 2018, fostering local partnerships and developing a robust supply chain for wind power. The firm currently has an offshore wind pipeline of approximately 5 GW under development in the country.
