Nick Wisniewski, 68, stands as the sole inhabitant on Stanhope Place, a once-thriving estate in Gowkthrapple near Wishaw, North Lanarkshire. Approximately 200 people vacated the area in 2021, leaving Nick as the last man standing. Despite the scheduled demolition of the 128 apartments, Nick remains steadfast, rejecting North Lanarkshire Council’s offers to purchase his property.
A Home in Limbo
Nick’s two-bedroom flat, acquired through the now-defunct Right to Buy scheme, has no neighbors. The eight blocks earmarked for demolition cannot be razed until Nick agrees to move. However, he believes the compensation offered wouldn’t secure him a new home. Undeterred, Nick invested nearly £2,000 in refurbishing his flat, including repainting, wood paneling, and a new carpet.
A Documentary Spotlight
Nick’s unique situation caught the attention of filmmaker Ryan Pollock, whose documentary “Exile on Stanhope Place” sheds light on the derelict estate. The film portrays Nick’s daily life and the challenges he faces as the last resident. Ryan empathizes with Nick’s plight, questioning why he should pay rent elsewhere when he wants to remain where he is.
