Scotland have landed a shock place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after Bangladesh refused to travel to India, turning the Associate nation’s dream into reality just weeks before the tournament begins.

Scotland arrived in India less than a week ago. Most teams have been fine-tuning plans for months. Berrington’s men had already shifted focus to bilateral series and the next World Cup cycle.

Yet the 37-year-old all-rounder insists the squad is ready.

“We’ve shown before that we belong at this level,” he said, pointing to famous wins over West Indies, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in previous global events. “Another chance has come our way sooner than anyone expected. We’re excited.”

The ICC stripped Bangladesh of their automatic spot after the BCB cited security and political concerns over touring India amid ongoing tensions.

Rather than shrink the tournament, cricket’s governing body opted to keep the 20-team format and invited Scotland – the highest-ranked Associate side yet to qualify.

The decision marks the first time a team has been replaced at such a late stage in World Cup history.

Scotland finished top of the Europe regional qualifier in 2024 and boast recent series wins against Australia A and Namibia. Their current ICC T20I ranking sits at 11th – higher than automatic qualifiers Ireland and above several Full Members in recent form.

Preparation Challenges and Quiet Confidence

Training sessions in Delhi have been intense but short. Strength and conditioning staff have prioritised recovery over volume.

Berrington revealed the squad held a players-only meeting on arrival.

“Everyone agreed: complain about the short prep or attack the chance,” he said. “We chose to attack it.”

Key players like Brandon McMullen, Michael Leask and Mark Watt are all fit. George Munsey returns after a strong Big Bash stint with Perth Scorchers.

Scotland open their campaign against Papua New Guinea on February 16 in Mumbai, followed by matches against Nepal and Italy in Group D.

Associate Nations Steal the Spotlight

Nepal captain Rohit Paudel admitted he grew up idolising India’s Rohit Sharma but promised his team would “give 100% to make our people proud”.

Italy skipper Wayne Madsen called it “the biggest moment in Italian cricket history”.

“Football is king back home,” Madsen said. “But getting live coverage of a World Cup for the first time will change everything. We want to put cricket on the map in Italy.”

Madsen also refused to discuss the controversial axing of former Australia Test batsman Joe Burns, saying only: “Out of respect for Joe and the federation, I’ll leave it there.”

From accepting elimination 18 months ago to walking out under World Cup lights in Mumbai – few journeys have been this dramatic.
