A Challenge to Remember
The event, which will begin at Dublin’s Guinness Storehouse and end at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, will take cyclists through a picturesque and challenging route. The final stretch is timed to coincide with Scotland’s Six Nations match against Ireland at Murrayfield on Sunday. The cyclists will tackle a mix of 100-mile legs, scenic routes, and rugged terrain, passing through towns such as Belfast, Glasgow, and Stonehaven, before reaching Edinburgh.
A Team Effort
Wainwright will be joined by several notable figures, including former Ireland and British and Irish Lions centre Gordon D’Arcy, rugby legend Scott Hastings, broadcaster and Deacon Blue drummer Dougie Vipond, and world-renowned cyclist Mark Beaumont. Together, the team aims to raise vital funds to support MND research, building on the impressive £5 million already raised by Doddie Aid since its inception.
Wainwright’s Ongoing Commitment to MND Research
This marks the sixth consecutive year that Wainwright has led a major fundraising effort in memory of his friend and teammate, Doddie Weir, who passed away from MND in 2022. Wainwright, who founded Doddie Aid in 2021, has already raised more than £2.5 million for the foundation through previous challenges, including last year’s Scotland to Rome cycle before a Six Nations game.
In his statement, Wainwright expressed his unwavering commitment to the cause:
“Even though Doddie is no longer with us, his incredible ability to unite people continues to inspire us all. We believe MND is not an incurable disease – it’s an underfunded one. The more money we raise for research, the closer we’ll get to the day when an MND diagnosis no longer means a devastating future.”
The Legacy of Doddie Weir
Wainwright’s dedication is echoed by Paul Thompson, director of fundraising at the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, who praised Wainwright’s continued determination to support those affected by MND:
