Astronaut Chris Hadfield Praises Scotland’s Thriving Space Industry

Canadian astronaut and author Chris Hadfield has described Scotland’s growing space sector as both “exciting” and “inspiring.” As the nation prepares for its first vertical launch from the SaxaVord Spaceport on Unst later this year, Hadfield emphasized the importance of independent satellite launch capabilities.

Scotland’s Space Ambitions Gain Momentum

Scotland’s space industry has been expanding rapidly, with SaxaVord Spaceport leading the charge. Located in the Shetland Islands, the facility is gearing up for a historic moment with German company Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) set to conduct a test flight from the site in July.

Hadfield, speaking to STV’s Scotland Tonight ahead of his UK tour, highlighted the strategic significance of developing homegrown launch capabilities. He pointed out that countries need to consider whether they should rely on foreign nations for space launches or establish their own infrastructure.

“This isn’t just about science and research,” Hadfield explained. “It’s also about communication, commercial opportunities, and, frankly, national security. Look at conflicts around the world—space assets play a huge role.”

The ability to launch satellites from home soil carries broad implications. According to Hadfield, the UK’s investment in space technology aligns with a global trend of nations reducing dependency on external launch providers.

RFA One, the rocket set for launch, stands 30 meters tall and consists of three stages. It is designed to deliver a payload of up to 1,300 kilograms into a sun-synchronous orbit. If successful, this will be the first vertical satellite launch from European soil.

However, RFA’s journey has not been without setbacks. A static fire test last year ended in an explosion, delaying the initial launch plans. Despite this, the company remains optimistic, aiming for a full-scale launch by 2025.

Scotland’s Growing Role in Space Exploration

The UK’s space sector is rapidly evolving, with Scotland at its core. Beyond SaxaVord, other spaceports such as Sutherland Spaceport are in development, aiming to support further satellite launches.

Hadfield believes Scotland’s involvement represents a “grand new stage” in exploration and development. With more nations acquiring launch capabilities, the landscape of space travel is shifting.

“Eventually, we might even see crewed missions from here,” he speculated. “That’s an incredible thought.”
