Major Energy Storage Milestone for Scotland’s Renewable Sector
Apatura, a renewable energy storage specialist, has secured planning approval for a 400 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Denny, near Plean, just five miles southeast of Stirling, Scotland. This project marks a major step forward in supporting the UK’s transition to a stable and sustainable energy grid.
Expanding Apatura’s Storage Portfolio
This latest approval brings Apatura’s total consented pipeline to 1.4 GW across seven projects in the past year alone. The Denny site, covering 112,000 m³, underscores the company’s commitment to delivering grid-scale storage solutions that align with Scotland’s renewable energy ambitions.
Andrew Philpott, Chief Development Officer at Apatura, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are delighted that Ministers have backed this crucial scheme, with no objections from the local Stirling Council. Scotland plays a key role in our vision for renewable energy infrastructure, and this approval strengthens its strategic position.”
Strengthening the UK’s Energy Security
The Denny BESS site will store surplus electricity during high generation periods and release it when demand surges. This enhances grid resilience while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The project is aligned with:

- Scotland’s Renewable Targets: Contributing to the goal of generating 50% of Scotland’s total energy consumption from renewable sources.

Scottish Ministers, in their decision letter, emphasized that the facility will “support the resilience of the electricity network” by efficiently storing renewable energy and contributing to carbon reduction.
