An amber warning for snow has been extended across several regions of Scotland as Storm Bert continues to impact the country. The new alert now includes the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, East Ayrshire, and South Lanarkshire. Previously, the warning had covered parts of the Highlands, Aberdeenshire, Perth and Kinross, and Angus.
Weather Impact and Travel Disruptions
The amber warning, which comes into effect at 07:00 on Saturday, is expected to severely disrupt travel, events, and power supplies in affected areas. Snow, wind, and rain have already created challenging conditions across much of Scotland. Police Scotland has advised against unnecessary travel, with roads particularly hazardous due to deep snow, especially on higher routes.
Temperatures across the country have remained below freezing all week, contributing to snow and ice accumulation, particularly in the north. Some rural communities are at risk of being cut off due to the conditions.
Road Safety and Transport Alerts
Transport Scotland has warned of potential travel disruptions as snow impacts major routes. Restrictions may be imposed on several key bridges, including the Skye Bridge, Kessock Bridge, and the Forth Road Bridge. Bear Scotland, the agency responsible for maintaining roads in the region, is monitoring conditions closely and ready to respond to any emergencies. Drivers of high-sided vehicles, such as caravans, are particularly urged to exercise caution.
Severe Weather Across the Country
In addition to snow, Environment Agency Sepa has issued flood alerts for areas including Aberdeenshire, Dundee, and Dumfries and Galloway, with rainfall contributing to the potential for localized flooding. Several events have already been canceled due to the severe weather, including weekend Christmas light switch-ons in Perth and Renfrew, and a League Two match between Elgin City and Clyde.
Ferry services are also impacted, with CalMac warning of possible cancellations due to high winds. Some services to Islay and Colonsay have already been called off.
Disruptions to Schools and Services
The weather has led to significant school closures across the region. Approximately 30 schools in Aberdeenshire were closed on Friday, along with 10 schools in the Highlands. Moray Council also had to close nine schools due to the adverse weather conditions. Many schools are expected to open later than usual on Saturday.
Ongoing Monitoring
Storm Bert is expected to be slow-moving, and forecasters have indicated that it will only begin to clear from Monday. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to stay informed about weather conditions and take necessary precautions.
