Glasgow refused to stay down. Less than 48 hours after a ferocious blaze gutted one of the city’s busiest corners, business owners are already planning their comeback while the public has smashed every crowdfunding record in sight.
By Wednesday morning, the GoFundMe for the five devastated Union Street businesses had surged past £215,000 and was still climbing fast.
The Moment Everything Changed
It started just after 4pm on Sunday 9 March inside Vapes4You on Union Street. Within minutes the fire ripped through the building, reaching Sexy Coffee above and spreading to neighbouring shops and flats.
Six fire engines fought the flames for hours. Part of the tenement collapsed. Eyewitnesses described “a wall of fire” and black smoke so thick it blocked out the afternoon sun.
Firefighters stayed on site until Wednesday morning with high-reach appliances still damping down hotspots three days later.
Sexy Coffee Boss Breaks Silence with Emotional Promise
Gian Luca Ragazzi, the Italian-born owner of Sexy Coffee, posted a heartfelt message on Instagram that has now been shared thousands of times.
“Opening Sexy Coffee in September 2023 was a dream come true for me,” he wrote. “I want to assure everyone that it is now my absolute mission to reopen the unit in the same location. When we rebuild, we will do everything possible to create something truly special and unbelievably eye catching.”
Customers flooded the comments with crying emojis and promises to queue round the block on reopening day. His second branch on Argyle Street has been packed solid since Monday morning.
Rail Chaos Drags into Second Week
Glasgow Central’s high-level platforms will stay shut for the rest of this week at the earliest, Network Rail confirmed on Wednesday.
Low-level Argyle Line services restarted on Wednesday morning, but every single main-line train to Paisley, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire and the south is still starting or terminating at Glasgow Queen Street or Shields Road.
Commuters faced another morning of misery:
- Hundreds of trains cancelled or delayed
- Replacement buses packed to crushing point
- Journey times doubled for many travellers
The Caledonian Sleeper to London is still running from Edinburgh Waverley, with ScotRail letting passengers travel free between Glasgow and Edinburgh to connect.
Community Cash Floods In
Victoria McCaffrey, owner of nearby Mini McCaffrey’s boutique, set up the GoFundMe on Sunday night. She originally set a £5,000 target “just to help with immediate costs”.
By Wednesday lunchtime it stood at £215,347 from more than 7,500 donors.
Donations came from across Scotland and beyond. One anonymous giver dropped £5,000 with the message: “Glasgow looks after its own.”
Every penny will be split equally between the five affected businesses: Sexy Coffee, Vapes4You, a tattoo studio, a beauty salon and a phone repair shop.
First Minister John Swinney visited the site on Tuesday and said: “Glasgow has been knocked down before and we always get back up stronger. These businesses will flourish again.”
What Happens Next
Structural engineers are still assessing the burned-out shell. Early reports suggest the building may need to be demolished and completely rebuilt.
Glasgow City Council has promised fast-track planning permission for any rebuild on the existing footprint.
Behind the scenes, landlords and insurers are already in talks. Some owners are quietly confident they could be trading again before Christmas if everything falls into place.
One thing is certain: the people of Glasgow have sent the clearest possible message. When the city burns, the city rebuilds together.
We have seen this spirit before, and we will see it again. Union Street will come back louder, bolder and sexier than ever.
