The UK Government marked a significant celebration of Scotland’s vibrant Indian community by hosting its first Diwali and Bhandi Chhor Divas event in Scotland. This event, organized by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), took place in Glasgow and underscored the deep connections between Scotland and India.
Strengthening UK-India Ties
The Diwali and Bhandi Chhor Divas celebration emphasized the “living bridge” that connects Scotland with India, a concept supported by Indo-Pacific Minister Catherine West. She highlighted the importance of such events in enhancing bilateral relations and fostering growth between the two countries.
Minister West stated, “The spirit of Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas is bringing people together, so it is important to celebrate the unique contribution Scotland is playing in the UK Government’s drive to strengthen our partnership with India.” She added, “Whether it is Scotch whisky or renewable energy, this government is determined to boost trade and investment between India and the UK to improve the livelihoods of working people in both countries.”
A Celebration of Scotland’s Indian Communities
The Glasgow event was an opportunity to honor the substantial contributions of Scotland’s Indian communities to the UK’s business, cultural, and political life. Guests enjoyed a range of Indian-inspired canapés, including haggis pakora and ‘Mango Wee Lassie’ drinks, celebrating Scotland’s multicultural identity.
India’s Consul General, Siddarth Malik, attended as a special guest and speaker, further solidifying the relationship between Scotland, the UK, and India.
Promoting Economic Collaboration
The celebration also highlighted several key business initiatives and foreign direct investment (FDI) successes supported by the UK Government. One of the most notable projects involved Edinburgh-based Carbon Masters Ltd, which secured a £27 million deal for a waste management project in Bengaluru, India. This project aims to convert wet waste into environmentally friendly products.
Another notable achievement was Isle of Barra Distillers’ £2 million deal with Indian distributor Oberoi Spirits to export its products across eight Indian states, further strengthening trade ties.
Additionally, the UK Government’s efforts in securing whisky excise duty cuts in India were also discussed, reflecting the importance of the whisky industry to both Scotland and India.
International Collaboration and Growth
The celebration was also a reminder of Scotland’s growing international influence, with Scottish Government officials attending to discuss collaboration opportunities. The UK Government’s support of international trade and investment has been integral to Scotland’s success in attracting global business.
Minister West concluded her visit by meeting with staff at Abercrombie House, the FCDO’s joint headquarters in East Kilbride, where more than 900 staff help shape and deliver the UK’s foreign policy, emphasizing the importance of Scotland in the UK’s global strategy.
