Scotland Braces for Weekend Snow as Cold Snap Continues

Parts of Scotland are in for a wintry weekend, with the Met Office forecasting snow over higher ground as chilly conditions persist. While the snowfall may not be heavy, the gloomy weather is expected to linger well into next week before clearer skies emerge.

Snow Expected Over Scotland’s Highlands

From Friday night into Saturday, snow is likely to fall in parts of Scotland, especially in the Grampians. According to the Met Office, accumulations will be minor, with only a few centimetres expected over higher elevations.

A spokesperson for the Met Office confirmed: “That’s not forecast to bring any real accumulation. So falling snow, nothing much.”

They added: “We could see potentially up to a few centimetres in the Grampians. So not huge amounts.”

While the snowfall in Scotland is expected to be light, the north of England might also experience flurries at lower elevations. However, the Met Office suggests that any snow falling in these areas is unlikely to settle.

Gloomy Skies and Freezing Air Set to Dominate

Scotland and much of the UK have been gripped by overcast skies, with cold air from the east keeping conditions damp and chilly.

  • Friday morning may bring slightly clearer skies in central parts of the UK.
  • Cold, moist air from the east will keep the weekend gloomy.
  • Sunday and Monday are likely to see continued cloud cover before conditions change by Tuesday.

Deputy chief meteorologist Mike Silverstone noted: “We do see some change in our weather through the weekend, with rain in the west and the chance of snow further east over higher ground on Saturday.”

When Will the Weather Improve?

The Met Office suggests that relief could arrive by Tuesday. A shift in wind direction is expected to bring drier air, allowing for brighter conditions.

“For a time, we’ve had these easterly conditions which have brought some more moist and cold air in the UK, cloudy and gloomy conditions,” said a Met Office spokesperson.

They added, “As we get to Tuesday, we actually see more of a southerly track to the wind, which is bringing drier air, which will allow for some clearer skies for a time and a set of potential brighter spells at the beginning of next week.”

Scotland’s Winter Weather Outlook

While a major winter storm is not expected, Scotland’s cold snap is far from over. The following days will likely remain grey and chilly, with only a brief respite next week before conditions shift once again.

Weather Feature Expected Conditions
Snowfall Light, mostly over high ground
Temperature Cold, below seasonal average
Cloud Cover Persistent through early next week
Sunshine Possible by Tuesday

Scots should brace for another few days of wintry weather, but there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon as next week could bring clearer skies and drier conditions.
