The Refugee Festival Scotland Media Awards 2025 are now open for entries, with nominations sought from across Scotland’s media landscape to honour exceptional journalism focused on refugee and asylum issues.
Organised by the Scottish Refugee Council in partnership with the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), the awards spotlight stories that foster greater public understanding of forced migration, while championing accuracy, fairness, and sensitivity in coverage of people seeking protection in Scotland.
Categories and Eligibility
Entries are open to journalists, editors, independent media, and members of the public who wish to nominate impactful reporting. The awards will recognise standout work across six categories:
-
Independent Media: Stories, podcasts, or radio on independent platforms
-
Written News: News reports in print, online or multimedia
-
Features: In-depth or creative explorations of refugee issues
-
Broadcast: TV or digital video content, including documentaries
-
Radio: News segments, full-length features, or programme excerpts
-
Local Media: Regional and community coverage in any medium
Nominations close on Monday, May 5. Entries must demonstrate journalistic integrity and a commitment to nuanced, human-centred storytelling.
“These awards celebrate responsible journalism that gives voice to refugee experiences and challenges misinformation,” said a spokesperson for the Scottish Refugee Council.
The awards form a key part of the Refugee Festival Scotland, an annual celebration of arts, culture, and community organised by and for people rebuilding their lives in Scotland after displacement.
