From Small Beginnings to Industry Leader
Sixty years ago, a group of determined fish farmers stocked the first generation of farmed salmon into Lochailort. Back then, the process was rudimentary. Fish were reared in small pens, and farmers relied on trial and error to refine their methods.
Things look very different today. Mowi is now the largest salmon producer in Scotland, harvesting over 70,000 tonnes of premium Scottish salmon annually. Its operations span from hatcheries and farms to high-tech processing facilities.

- New processing facility upgrade at Blar Mhor – A modernized plant designed to improve efficiency and sustainability.
- High-energy farm at Stulaigh South, South Uist – Expected to create seven new jobs and produce up to 3,000 tonnes of salmon.
- Broodstock facility at Ardessie – A state-of-the-art hatchery aimed at strengthening Mowi’s breeding program.
- Inchmore Visitor Experience – An interactive center to educate stakeholders about the aquaculture industry.
- Sanda Island development – A newly acquired site that Mowi hopes to transform into both a salmon farm and a tourism destination.
One of Mowi’s standout investments is its Rosyth-based Consumer Products UK (CPUK) plant, which marks its own milestone—ten years of operation. Originally launched with a small team of 43, the site now employs up to 1,000 people during peak production. A £30 million investment has turned it into the UK’s largest salmon processing facility, producing over 250,000 meals weekly.
Impact on Rural Communities
Salmon farming is more than an industry in Scotland—it’s a lifeline for many remote communities. Mowi plays a crucial role in providing employment, particularly in rural areas where opportunities are scarce.
The company’s contributions go beyond jobs. It supports housing initiatives, assists local fishers in distress, sponsors youth sports teams, and participates in environmental cleanups. It even brings its Mowi Salmon Wagon to community events to raise funds for local causes.

A major focus for the company is sustainability. By the end of 2025, all Mowi farms in Scotland aim to be certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), ensuring adherence to the highest environmental and welfare standards.
