In a significant step towards the UK’s clean energy future, the Moray West wind farm has officially been switched on, marking a pivotal moment in Scotland’s renewable energy journey. Located 13 miles off the coast of Buckie, Moray West is one of Scotland’s largest offshore wind farms and will play a crucial role in the nation’s energy transition.
A New Era for Clean Energy in Scotland
With an impressive generating capacity of up to 882 MW, the Moray West wind farm is expected to provide enough power for around 1.3 million homes, which accounts for half of Scotland’s households. This marks a major achievement in the UK’s efforts to harness renewable energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The completion of the wind farm also positions Ocean Winds as the largest offshore wind operator in Scotland. The company already operates two wind farms off the North East coast, with a third project in the pipeline, highlighting Scotland’s central role in the growing offshore wind industry.

The Moray West project is more than just an energy milestone; it is a significant economic driver for Scotland. The wind farm’s development also saw the installation of some of the largest turbines ever used in British waters, each towering up to 257 meters above sea level, a testament to the scale and ambition of the project.
