Dior Documentary Offers Insight into Scotland-Inspired Cruise Show

Dior continues its tradition of showcasing the creative process behind its cruise collections with the release of a new documentary, Dior in Scotland. This documentary gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at how Maria Grazia Chiuri, the artistic director of Dior’s women’s collections, developed her Scotland-inspired designs for the Cruise 2025 show. The grand event took place in the stunning Italianate gardens at the historic Drummond Castle in June 2024.

Chiuri’s Creative Journey Through Scotland

In Dior in Scotland, the documentary explores Chiuri’s deep engagement with Scotland’s rich cultural and historical landscape. The designer was particularly inspired by Clare Hunter, a feminist historian who wrote the essay Embroidering Her Truth: Mary, Queen of Scots and the Language of Power. This essay was pivotal in shaping Chiuri’s collection, as it connected themes of power, history, and women’s influence through the art of embroidery.

Chiuri’s process began with a deep dive into Dior’s own archives, particularly the 1955 spring collection—which had been shown in the ballroom of Gleneagles Hotel—and she closely examined black-and-white images from that iconic show. This archival research set the foundation for the designs, which would later incorporate a blend of classic Dior elements with Scotland’s rich textile heritage.

Collaborations with Scottish Artisans

The documentary highlights Chiuri’s dedication to collaborating with Scottish artisans to authentically capture the country’s textile legacy. Chiuri made multiple trips to Scotland, including visits to renowned establishments such as Johnstons of Elgin and Esk Cashmere, where she explored Fair Isle and other traditional Scottish knitwear designs. She also spent time in the Outer Hebrides, where artisans craft Harris Tweed using treadle looms in their homes, and worked closely with the local collective to create a special tartan for her collection.

Additionally, Chiuri delved into the archives of Robert Mackie, a prestigious maker of ceremonial headwear worn by the Scottish military regiments. This immersive process allowed Chiuri to blend high fashion with traditional Scottish craftsmanship, resulting in a collection that reflected both Dior’s elegance and Scotland’s cultural heritage.

A Cinematic Landscape

Chiuri’s connection to Scotland was not just about textiles; the country’s breathtaking landscapes and romantic atmosphere deeply influenced her creative vision. In an interview with WWD, Chiuri described Scotland as “cinematic,” with its rich history and stunning castles creating a “poetic” and “fairytale” setting. She also mentioned how Scotland’s outdoor culture has influenced iconic designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, further deepening her understanding of why Christian Dior himself was fascinated by the country.

The documentary will allow fashion enthusiasts to experience Chiuri’s process firsthand and offer a glimpse into the intricate work involved in blending Scottish heritage with Dior’s timeless elegance.
