Boralex Launches Its First 106 MW Wind Farm in Scotland

Canadian renewable energy company Boralex Inc. has officially started operations at its first wind farm in the United Kingdom. The Limekiln Wind Farm, located near Thurso in northern Scotland, boasts an installed capacity of 106 megawatts. The facility, backed by a 15-year public contract and a power purchase agreement, solidifies Boralex’s expansion into the UK market.

A Milestone for Boralex in the UK

This project is a significant step for Boralex as it establishes its footprint in the UK’s renewable energy sector. The wind farm consists of 24 Vestas V136-4.5MW turbines, each standing 150 metres tall at the blade tip.

The company has prioritized the UK in its strategic expansion plans, aiming to reach 1 gigawatt of operational and ready-to-build renewable energy capacity in the region by 2030. The Limekiln project represents the first tangible step in that direction.

Backed by Strong Long-Term Agreements

The wind farm benefits from a 15-year Contract for Difference (CfD) that is set to take effect in April 2028. Until then, Boralex has secured a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Statkraft, one of the UK’s leading PPA providers, ensuring stable revenue during the interim period.

By securing long-term financial agreements, Boralex is mitigating market risks while ensuring the project’s financial viability.

Economic and Environmental Benefits for the Region

Beyond generating clean energy, the Limekiln Wind Farm is expected to make a lasting impact on the local economy.

  • The wind farm will generate enough electricity annually to power approximately 100,000 British households.
  • At least 8 direct jobs and around 50 indirect jobs will be supported by the project’s operations.
  • A Community Benefit Fund of over £500,000 per year will be distributed for local development projects.

Additionally, Boralex has incorporated several environmental initiatives into the project. These include peatland restoration and a native species planting programme to enhance biodiversity in the area.

Strengthening the UK’s Renewable Energy Goals

The UK has set ambitious targets for reducing carbon emissions, with wind energy playing a crucial role. Scotland, in particular, has been at the forefront of the country’s renewable energy efforts.

Boralex’s entry into the UK market aligns with the government’s strategy to expand wind power capacity. As more projects come online, the country moves closer to achieving its long-term sustainability goals.
