Andrew Jenkins, star of reality TV show The Traitors, completed a remarkable 750-mile walk from Scotland to Wales, raising both awareness and funds for brain injury charity Headway. His journey, which spanned 42 days, is a testament to his resilience and commitment to improving mental health support for others.
From Ardross Castle to Cardiff Castle: A 750-Mile Journey
Andrew Jenkins, a former insurance broker turned reality TV star, walked from Ardross Castle in Scotland to Cardiff Castle in Wales, covering a distance of 1,200 km (746 miles) over 42 days. His journey, which began in September, saw him walking an average of eight hours a day through Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, and eventually Wales.
Having suffered a near-fatal brain injury in 1999, Jenkins was told he may never walk or talk again. Though he physically recovered, the impact of the accident left him battling with mental health challenges for over 20 years. His walk, in part, sought to inspire others facing similar struggles, offering a message of hope: “If you’re struggling, don’t give up, keep believing in yourself, the better days will come.”
Mental Health: A Lifelong Battle
Jenkins’ trek was more than just a physical challenge; it was an opportunity for him to share his personal journey and raise awareness about mental health. He discussed how his experience with brain injury and mental health struggles made him feel “weak,” but now encourages others not to bottle up their feelings.
Jenkins specifically aimed to raise funds and awareness for Headway, a charity that supports people with brain injuries. He spoke openly about the importance of talking about struggles, something he had not done for over 20 years. “I wish I’d opened up a lot sooner,” he confessed.
His trek also highlighted the alarming rates of male suicide, a subject Jenkins is passionate about addressing. “Suicide rates are actually ridiculous at the moment, especially in men. I just want to help do my little bit out there for people and try and reduce them.”
The Finish Line and a Heartfelt Reunion
Upon reaching the finish line at Cardiff Castle, Jenkins was surprised by Professor Hamish Laing, the surgeon who saved his life 25 years ago. The emotional reunion left Jenkins in tears, as he described the experience of meeting the man who had been instrumental in his survival. “Whenever I see him, it’s like I go into my childlike mode. I just go all shy and nervous,” he said.
Jenkins, who was a finalist on the second season of The Traitors, used the platform to talk about mental health and connect with communities throughout his journey. Along the way, he spoke to sports and community groups, furthering his mission to support brain injury survivors.
Continuing the Fight for Mental Health Support
Jen Murgatroyd, the director of fundraising at Headway, expressed the charity’s deep gratitude for Jenkins’ efforts. The funds raised through his walk will support programs aimed at helping families with loved ones in critical care and offer a helpline for brain injury survivors.
Despite completing the grueling walk, Jenkins isn’t done just yet. He joked about continuing his trek all the way to Land’s End, the southernmost point of the UK. Though his partner quickly vetoed the idea, Jenkins is already looking ahead, reflecting on the profound impact his journey has had on himself and others.
