Ralph Hector’s story begins with a frustration familiar to many musicians. “The whole reason the label was set up was because I was playing with a lot of like-minded folk, and we were sending demos to record labels and not getting any feedback,” Ralph explains. His response to the lack of opportunities was to take matters into his own hands, creating Iffy Folk Records as a platform to release the kind of music that truly mattered to him and his friends. For Ralph, it was never about making money—it was about the pure enjoyment of making and sharing music with those who appreciated it.

In an effort to maintain control over his projects and cultivate a more intimate, personal environment for his music, Ralph built his own studio at home. “The difference that has made is massive,” he says. With a dedicated space for creativity, he no longer had to rely on external studios or time constraints, allowing him and his collaborators to work more fluidly. This setup has undoubtedly played a crucial role in shaping the label’s continued success.
Despite the challenges that come with running an independent label, particularly in a competitive and often tough music industry, Ralph remains optimistic. “It’s challenging to make a proper breakthrough,” he acknowledges. “It’s a difficult climate out there in terms of opportunities, and certainly when you’re promoting something, and you can feel as if you’re not breaking through.”

What keeps Ralph going is the belief that success can come in unexpected ways. “You do read quite a lot of stories about how sometimes somebody’s got through to the right person at the right time, and then all of a sudden, things blossom from there.” While that serendipity might seem rare, it’s something Ralph still hopes for, as he continues to push the boundaries of what an independent label can achieve.
