The Snow Queen: A Magical Musical Adventure at the Lyceum Theatre

The Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh is presenting a new Scottish adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale, The Snow Queen, as its festive show for 2023. The musical, written by Morna Young and directed by Cora Bissett, features 14 original songs by Finn Anderson and a talented cast of actors, singers and musicians. The show runs from November 23 until January 1, 2024.

A Modern Twist on a Timeless Story

The Snow Queen tells the story of Gerda, a brave and brilliant Edinburgh lass who sets out to rescue her best friend Kei, who has been kidnapped by the beautiful and fearsome Snow Queen. Along the way, she encounters a magical garden, a talking crow, a robber girl, a wise old woman and other fantastical characters, who help or hinder her quest.

The adaptation gives a modern twist to the timeless story, setting it in 1890 Edinburgh and adding local jokes and references. It also explores the themes of friendship, courage, loyalty and the power of imagination. The Snow Queen is not only a villain, but also a complex character who has her own backstory and motives.

A Spectacular and Joyful Production

The production is a spectacular and joyful spectacle, with stunning costumes and set design by Emily James, wintry lighting by Lizzie Powell and inventive sound design by Finn Anderson. The movement direction by Jack Webb and the fight direction by EmmaClaire Brightlyn add to the excitement and drama of the show.

The cast is superb, with Rosie Graham as Gerda, Sebastian Lim-Seet as Kei, Claire Dargo as the Snow Queen and Samuel Pashby as Corbie, her minion. The ensemble also includes Wendy Seager, Antony Strachan, Naomi Stirrat, Kieran Andrew and Yana Harris, who play multiple roles with versatility and flair.

The songs are catchy, varied and emotive, ranging from rock to folk to ballads. The music is performed live by the cast and a band of four musicians, led by musical director Gavin Whitworth. The songs enhance the mood and the message of the story, and invite the audience to sing along and join the adventure.
