Bruce McColl, member services manager for the Scottish Craft Butchers Association, shared insights into the origins of this culinary tradition. He explained that one theory is that steak pie became the go-to meal because January 1st wasn’t traditionally a public holiday. As a result, families were often too busy to prepare elaborate meals. Instead, they would purchase large steak pies to feed the family – an early version of a “ready meal.”

Steak pie’s popularity on New Year’s Day also relates to its practicality. According to McColl, many people would prepare and enjoy a steak pie as their main meal on Hogmanay before they started drinking. The meal is easy to make in advance and can serve as a substantial dish before the evening’s festivities began.
Another reason for its continued popularity is the dish’s versatility. It’s hearty and easy to serve to guests throughout the day as visitors come and go. The large, filling nature of the pie makes it perfect for feeding a crowd, especially after a long night of celebrating.
From Hangovers to History
While some might associate steak pie with curing a Hogmanay hangover, the dish likely became popular simply due to the lack of time to prepare a meal on New Year’s Day. Prior to the establishment of January 1st as a public holiday in Scotland, the country’s citizens didn’t have the luxury of resting and cooking elaborate meals the way we do now. Steak pies from local butchers filled the gap, and this tradition stuck.
