A 10-year-old boy from Glasgow has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that affects the bones and blood cells.
What is the boy’s condition?
The boy, who wishes to remain anonymous, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer that usually affects teenagers and young adults. He was referred to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow by his GP after he noticed a lump on his arm.
Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone cancer in children and young people, accounting for about 10% of all cases. It can occur anywhere in the body, but most commonly affects the long bones of the arms and legs. The symptoms may include pain, swelling, redness, or tenderness at the site of the lump, as well as fever, weight loss, or fatigue.
How is the boy being treated?
The boy is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the Royal Hospital for Children. He will also need surgery to remove any remaining tumour tissue from his arm once it has shrunk enough. The treatment is expected to last for several months and will require regular follow-up appointments with his oncologist and radiologist.
