Scotland’s First ‘Hydrogen Homes’ Open Ahead of Summer H2 Heating Trial

Scotland’s journey toward sustainable energy solutions takes a bold step forward with the unveiling of its first-ever “hydrogen homes” in Fife. These homes, part of the H100 Fife trial, will soon serve as a testing ground for a large-scale project that aims to replace natural gas with hydrogen in residential heating systems.

The groundbreaking initiative, launched by SGN, a natural gas distributor, marks a significant moment in the push for greener energy alternatives. Three homes have been specially constructed and connected to a hydrogen gas grid that began operations in December 2024. However, as of now, only two of these homes have been outfitted with appliances that can run on hydrogen.

This trial, known as H100 Fife, aims to flow hydrogen into 300 households across Fife, replacing conventional natural gas supplies with cleaner, green hydrogen. The hydrogen used will be locally produced, using an innovative combination of a 7MW offshore wind turbine and a 5MW electrolyser, ensuring the hydrogen is both renewable and locally sourced.

Households selected for the trial will not only play a role in pioneering a new energy solution for the region but will also receive free installation of hydrogen-compatible appliances and access to the ongoing support needed to run the system.
