Apple’s iPhone Duo Costs $1,999 and Lands in October

Apple put a $1,999 price on the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, and set store availability for October 23. New chief executive John Ternus showed it on September 9 in Cupertino, at an event Apple called Surprise and Shine.

The slab beside it, the iPhone 18 Pro, starts at $1,199 and reaches stores on September 18. Both phones use the same A20 Pro chip.

John Ternus Bets His First Week on a Foldable

Ternus took the top job on September 1, eight days before the keynote, after Tim Cook moved to executive chairman. The foldable closed the show. Apple still sells far more ordinary iPhones than folding ones, and this was the first product launch of the new job.

iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.

That most transformational change to iPhone still carries a name Microsoft already burned. The Surface Duo was a dual-screen Android phone Microsoft shipped in 2020 and later killed. Apple used Duo on a 1990s laptop too. The new phone is a single flexible inner panel, not two rigid screens with a seam.

Closed, Apple says it is about the size of a passport, with a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display that has 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Open, the 7.6-inch inner display is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both panels share the same aspect ratio, peak at 3,000 nits, and run ProMotion. Apple calls the open phone the thinnest iPhone it has made.

The frame is grade 5 titanium with a mirror polish. The hinge uses more than 100 parts, a 3D-printed cover with 100 percent recycled titanium, and a magnet array that snaps it shut. Ceramic Shield covers the back, Ceramic Shield 2 covers the outer glass, and Apple rates the phone IP68 for dust and water. Touch ID sits in the side button. You can also unlock it with an Apple Watch. There is no Face ID cutout on the inner screen; a FaceTime camera hides under that display until a call needs it.

The Same A20 Pro Commands an $800 Premium

iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, then $2,199 for 512GB and $3,199 for 2TB. Apple also lists $83.29 a month for 24 months. The A20 Pro inside is the same 2-nanometer chip as iPhone 18 Pro: a 6-core CPU Apple says is up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster, 50 percent more memory bandwidth, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The $800 gap over the $1,199 Pro is the hinge, the second screen, the titanium book, and a dual-battery pack, not a faster processor.

Apple says a new chip package, borrowed from M-series Mac silicon, sits the die beside memory and ties A20 Pro straight to a vapor chamber. On Duo, the company claims up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro. A separate display engine drives the inner and outer panels at once so apps can jump from cover to canvas without a stutter.

IPHONE DUO AGAINST THE SLAB AND THE FOLD 8

In the United States the Duo is $100 above Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, which Samsung unveiled on July 22 and sells from $1,899. That slim gap is mostly an American story. In the United Kingdom Apple lists the Duo at £1,999 against £1,699 for the Fold 8. In India the Duo starts at 299,900 rupees. The chip comparison is kinder to Apple. Fold 8 runs Qualcomm’s 3-nanometer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Duo runs Apple’s 2-nanometer A20 Pro.

A Passport Body That Weighs 254 Grams

The book is not the light one. iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams. Fold 8 weighs 201 grams, 53 grams less. Closed, Duo measures 84.1 by 117.8 by 11.3 millimeters. Open it is 164.6 by 117.8 by 5.2 millimeters. Fold 8 is thinner when shut (9.7 millimeters) and when open (4.5 millimeters). Anyone who already carries a Fold 8 will feel the extra mass in a pocket before they feel the extra software.

Apple’s trade is durability and the cover glass. Duo is IP68. Fold 8 is IP48. The inner Duo panel uses high-strength glass above and below the fold, a nano-texture finish that cuts glare and hides the crease, and adhesives Apple says let the layers slide like pages in a book. A titanium plate sits under that stack. Those layers, plus the hinge ribs and ceramic-fiber antenna splits, are why the passport is thick when closed.

Battery life is the other number Apple wants you to hold. Two cells, one on each half, are managed as one pack. Apple claims up to 44 hours of video on the outer display, up to 31 hours on the inner display, and up to 24 hours of use when both screens share the load. Samsung’s inner-screen video claim on Fold 8 is 26 hours. Wired charging on Duo reaches about 50 percent in around 20 minutes. MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging reaches about 50 percent in around 30 minutes. The 18 Pro, with one screen and more room for a cell, is quicker on a cable: about 50 percent in around 15 minutes.

Why the iPhone Duo Waits Until October

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max go up for preorder at 5 a.m. PT on September 12 and go on sale Friday, September 18, in more than 65 countries, with 20 more markets on September 25. iPhone Duo preorders open at 5 a.m. PT on October 16 in more than 70 countries, with phones on October 23 and 28 further markets on October 30. That is 35 days between the Pro store date and the Duo store date.

The later window is the first time Apple has put a folding iPhone on a store calendar, after years when foldable display supply stayed the bottleneck. It also gives the $1,199 Pro a clean month of launch traffic before the $1,999 book arrives. Duo ships with iOS 27.1, not the iOS 27 build that lands on September 14. Apple Pencil with USB-C is promised on both Duo displays later this year, not on launch day.

Duo is eSIM-only in every market, a choice Apple says frees space for battery. iPhone 18 Pro is eSIM-only in a shorter list that includes the United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico, and several Gulf states, where Apple says dropping the SIM tray adds two hours of video playback. iOS 27 also adds iPhone Handoff, so a carrier that supports it can keep one number on two iPhones. That is the quiet path for someone who buys the book and keeps a Pro in the other pocket.

The $100 Hike Hits the Phone People Will Buy

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, did not talk about folding glass when he introduced iPhone 18 Pro. He talked about camera, battery, performance, and Siri. iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199. iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both use 256GB as the floor and add a 2TB tier. Colors are black, silver, glacier, and a new burgundy. Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue from iPhone 17 Pro are gone.

iPhone 17 Pro started at $1,099. The new floor is $100 higher. Over the summer, Cook called the memory shortage a hundred-year flood and said price increases were unavoidable. Research firm TechInsights estimated the 12GB of DRAM in an iPhone 17 Pro cost Apple about $39 and could cost about $145 in iPhone 18 Pro. The same shop put 256GB NAND at about $13 last year and about $51 this fall, and the bill of materials at about $582 rising to about $726. Some houses sketched a $200 to $270 sticker jump to hold margin. Apple passed along $100, and it applied that $100 to leftover iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, and iPhone Air units as well.

IPHONE 18 PRO BATTERY AND PRICE

• Video playback: Up to 36 hours on iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours on iPhone 18 Pro Max, on eSIM-only models.
• Fast charge: About 50 percent in around 15 minutes on a cable, or 50 percent in 30 minutes wireless; five minutes on Pro Max is about seven hours of video.
• The hike: $100 above iPhone 17 Pro’s $1,099 start, after Cook warned that memory costs could no longer be absorbed.
• The chip: A20 Pro with a vapor chamber Apple says has three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro design and up to 40 percent better sustained performance.

The camera on the slab is the one Duo does not match. iPhone 18 Pro’s 48MP Fusion Main uses six laser-cut blades to move between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0. A 48MP Ultra Wide and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto sit beside it, with optical-quality zoom through 8x. A smaller Dynamic Island still runs Face ID and can show three Live Activities at once. Pro Max, Apple says, posts the largest battery-life gain it has ever put on an iPhone. That is the phone the memory crunch actually repriced, and it is the phone that ships first.

Two Rear Cameras Against the Pro’s Three

Duo’s back has a 48MP Fusion Main with an integrated optical-quality 2x and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide with macro. There is no dedicated telephoto. The cover uses a 12MP Center Stage camera that can flip framing without rotating the phone. Rear cameras can shoot the selfie while the outer display previews the shot, the usual foldable trick. Video on the main camera goes to 4K at 120 fps in Dolby Vision.

The fold is doing camera work a slab cannot. Smart Take uses on-device models on A20 Pro to fire when people in the scene are posed, so the photographer can step in. Duo Preview puts the live view on the outer display for the subject. Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on that cover to pull a child’s eyes to the lens. Duo FaceTime lets someone beside you join a call on the outer screen. Under the inner panel, the hidden FaceTime camera works with the phone propped like a tent.

CAMERA TRICKS THAT NEED TWO SCREENS

• Smart Take: On-device models watch the scene and capture when subjects are posing, so you are not stuck behind the shutter.
• Duo Preview: The outer display shows the live view so the person in front of the rear cameras can fix framing and expression.
• Kid Cue: Peanuts clips play on the cover to pull a child’s eyes toward the lens.
• Duo FaceTime: A second person beside you can join the call on the outer display instead of crowding one panel.

iOS 27 on Duo moves the Dock, lock-screen controls, and a vertical Dynamic Island to the side so the tall canvas stays open for content. Open, the inner display can show two Home Screen pages with a scrolling Today View of widgets on the left. Split View puts two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, including two Safari windows. Apps can pair and return as a pair. Netflix, Zoom, and Slack are already built for the hinge poses, Apple said. StandBy can run on the inner or outer display even when the phone is not on a charger.

Apple Pencil Support Comes Later This Year

The accessories land with the phone, not before it. The iPhone Duo Case is $79 in navy blue and sand. The iPhone Duo Folio with a kickstand is $129 in navy blue and taupe. Both work with MagSafe and Qi2. The phone itself comes in star white and night sky. Apple says the build is 35 percent recycled content overall, with 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery, and that 60 percent of manufacturing energy across the supply chain is renewable.

N1 handles Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. C2, Apple’s next cellular modem, adds mmWave in the United States and, Apple says, faster uploads than C1X at 15 percent less energy. Camera Control still sits on the side to jump into the camera, including a Siri Camera mode that can see what you see. Siri AI, a beta with iOS 27, is the assistant Apple wants on that 7.6-inch canvas, with a conversation pane that uses the extra width.

The objection that keeps coming back is simple enough. Fold 8 is already in pockets, weighs 53 grams less, and undercuts Duo by $100 in the United States and by more than that in several other markets. Duo answers with IP68, a 2-nanometer chip shared with iPhone 18 Pro, a nano-texture inner panel, and iOS that finally splits two apps on a phone. It does not answer with a telephoto, a September ship date, or a weight that matches Samsung’s book. Preorders open October 16 at 5 a.m. PT. The phones follow on October 23.
