The Burrell Collection in Glasgow has earned the prestigious RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland award for 2024. Renovated by British studio John McAslan + Partners, the project has been lauded for its respectful restoration and ambitious updates, bringing the iconic structure firmly into the 21st century.
A Legacy Respected
Originally designed by Barry Gasson Architects, the Burrell Collection first opened its doors in 1983. Located within Glasgow’s Pollok Country Park, the museum’s unique architecture earned it a Grade A listing, but decades of wear necessitated a significant overhaul.
John McAslan + Partners took on the challenge, retaining the original structure’s integrity while introducing thoughtful expansions and modernized elements. This approach garnered praise from the jury, with jury chair David Kohn remarking on the project’s cultural significance
The Revitalization
Completed in 2022, the Burrell Collection’s renovation prioritized expanding gallery space and enhancing visitor access. The updates included a stunning three-story atrium with exposed timber and concrete, infusing the space with natural light and a modern aesthetic.
Key improvements include:
- Expanded Collection Space: Additional areas now allow more of the museum’s vast collection to be displayed.
- Improved Accessibility: Redesigned entryways and pathways ensure a seamless experience for all visitors.
- Sustainable Enhancements: Upgrades focused on environmental performance, aligning with modern ecological standards.
Standing Out Among the Competition
The Burrell Collection was chosen from a strong shortlist that included projects such as Ardoch by Moxon Architects and the University of Aberdeen Science and Teaching Hub by Reiach and Hall Architects. Previous winners of the Andrew Doolan Award include a remote house by Ann Nisbet Studio (2023) and a compact office and café by Moxon Architects (2022).
Honoring Scottish Architecture
The Andrew Doolan Award, named after the late Scottish architect Andrew Doolan, celebrates architectural excellence across Scotland. The Burrell Collection’s win underscores the transformative power of thoughtful design in preserving cultural heritage while embracing the future.
With this award, the Burrell Collection solidifies its place not only as a museum but as a beacon of architectural and cultural significance in Scotland.
