Galaxy S27 Ultra Gets M16 After iQOO and Apple
Samsung will put M16 OLED on the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra in 2027, after iPhone 18 Pro and iQOO 16, and use it to split the S27 lineup.
Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display have agreed to put M16 OLED on the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra. The phones are due in the first quarter of 2027, after Apple and iQOO have already shipped the same material.
The plan, described by people in the Seoul supply chain on September 13, 2026, is the first new OLED recipe on a Galaxy S phone in three years. It is also a grade split. The regular Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ stay on M14.
Samsung Display Already Shipped This Material
M16 is the name Samsung Display gives its newest mix of organic layers, the stuff that sets color, brightness, life, and how much power the panel burns. Higher numbers are newer. The mix is already in the wild.
Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in the United States on September 9, 2026, five days before Samsung Display stood on a stage with iQOO. Those Pro iPhones use M16, and so does the iPhone Duo. That foldable is another reason Apple keeps a limited Samsung Display supply for Apple’s foldable in the book.
On September 14, 2026, Samsung Display and iQOO held a joint screen event and billed the iQOO 16, due in China later in September, as the first Android phone on M16. Industry reporting in Seoul still lists Google’s Pixel 11 series, launched in August 2026, among M16 phones. Those are two different claims, and the event did not settle them.
The display leaker Ice Universe put the awkward bit in one line after the iQOO tie-up became obvious: Galaxy is waiting in the corridor while a Vivo sub-brand walks in with a dedicated line.
If you didn’t know any better, you’d think iQOO was Samsung Display’s own smartphone brand.
Ice Universe, display analyst, on X
That is the second-order move. Samsung Display sells brightness and life to whoever books the capacity. Samsung’s phone group gets the new recipe when it is ready to charge more for two of four S27 models, not when it can claim a world first.
What M16 Changes on the Screen
Do not read the iQOO 16 figures as Galaxy S27 Ultra specs. They describe the LEAD 2.0 panel Samsung Display showed with iQOO on September 14, built around M16, a custom high-refresh driver chip, and a line reserved for iQOO flagships. They are the public demo of what the material can do.
IQOO 16 M16 PANEL, AS SHOWN
| Spec | Figure |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 2,560 x 1,440 (WQHD) |
| Refresh | LTPO, 1Hz to 165Hz |
| Local peak brightness | 10,000 nits |
| Global peak brightness | 2,800 nits |
| Manual peak brightness | 1,100 nits |
| Power vs prior generation | Up to 30% lower |
| Color gamut | 1.24x DCI-P3 |
| PWM dimming | Up to 3,300Hz |
| Instant touch sampling | Up to 5,000Hz |
iQOO also said color uniformity is up 39.6% and brightness uniformity is up 22.3% against its last generation, with 100% first-frame brightness and up to 500Hz multi-finger sampling. The panel is polarizer-free, using on-cell film, and offers full-brightness DC dimming.
Samsung Display’s own polarizer-free LEAD OLED stack is the older idea behind that. A polarizer usually throws away more than 50% of the light. LEAD raises transmittance more than 1.5 times at the same power, which is why the company can talk about higher nits without a matching hit to the battery. In 2025, SID named LEAD display of the year and said the on-cell film cut panel thickness by 20%.
LEAD 2.0 on iQOO 16 is that stack plus M16. The Galaxy S27 Ultra is in line for the material. It is not promised the 165Hz 2K timing, the 10,000 nits local peak, or iQOO’s driver chip.
The Pro and Ultra Get a Price Fence
An industry official said the Pro and Ultra will take M16 as the upper pair, and that Color Filter-on-Encapsulation and Privacy Display will sit with it as the tools for splitting grades inside the S27 series. COE prints the color filter on the thin-film encapsulation layer so the old polarizer sheet can go. Privacy Display cuts what a person beside you can read.
The base pair moves too, just not as far. Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ leave M13, the mix used from the Galaxy S24 through the Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26+, and take M14. M14 first showed up on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung Display will supply every S27 OLED. There is no second panel vendor in the plan.
GALAXY S27 SCREEN PLAN
| Model | Size | Material | Extra stack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S27 | 6.27 inches | M14 | Not listed |
| Galaxy S27+ | 6.66 inches | M14 | Not listed |
| Galaxy S27 Pro | 6.47 inches | M16 | COE and Privacy Display |
| Galaxy S27 Ultra | 6.89 inches | M16 | COE and Privacy Display |
The Pro, at 6.47 inches, is smaller than the Plus. The Ultra stays the large phone at 6.89 inches. Four models, two materials, and the privacy stack reserved for the two that will cost more. That is how M16 lands on Galaxy: as a fence, after Apple and iQOO have already used it to sell 2026 flagships.
Privacy Display Still Has a Color Problem
The Galaxy S26 Ultra was the first regular Samsung phone to ship COE without a polarizer and the only one with Privacy Display. The feature works by narrowing the viewing cone so a shoulder surfer sees a dim, useless image. Some owners paid for that in other ways.
From March 2026, weeks after launch, people began posting that the center of the S26 Ultra screen was drifting red, worse after months of use and worse on bright white at high brightness. Samsung first said it was looking into the cause. In a later statement the company said the tint can show up after long spells at maximum brightness under strong light, the sort of setup used on retail demo units, and that the panel itself still works.
The display itself continues to function normally. As this is a matter of color balance rather than physical damage or a hardware defect, it can be addressed through software-based color calibration, and display panel replacement is not required.
Samsung, statement on Galaxy S26 Ultra color balance
On August 4, 2026, Samsung told owners in Korea, through the Members app, that a free same-day calibration was available at service centers even if the warranty had run out. On August 26, 2026, it began pushing an over-the-air color fix so people did not have to visit a shop. If Privacy Display returns on both the S27 Pro and the S27 Ultra, the software that maps that stack has to hold up on two phones, not one, and on a newer emissive mix.
iQOO 16 Is the Public Test Unit
Samsung Display did not wait for Galaxy Unpacked to show M16. It showed it with iQOO, at an event iQOO billed as the first time a phone brand had done a display briefing at Samsung Display’s Korean headquarters. The companies put a dedicated flagship line and a custom refresh chip on the table, then announced a longer “Future Display Exploration Program.”
That depth of partnership is why Ice Universe’s line about iQOO as Display’s closest Android partner landed. Replies under that post reached for a proverb about darkness under the lamp: the company that makes the panel is last to use it. Another replier argued Pixel 11 Pro XL already sits on M16, so iQOO’s “first Android” line is marketing. Either way, a Chinese gaming phone is the unit reviewers will measure in September 2026, months before anyone holds a Galaxy S27 Ultra.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Upper pair: Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra are planned for M16, COE, and Privacy Display, with a first-quarter 2027 launch.
- Base pair: Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ are planned for M14, leaving M13 after three generations.
- Supply: Samsung Display is down to supply every S27 OLED, after talks with BOE ended in June 2026.
- Public M16 unit: iQOO 16 is the Android phone Samsung Display has put on stage with 10,000 nits local peak and 2,800 nits global peak.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- S27 Ultra nits: No peak, global, or manual brightness has been given for the Galaxy panel.
- S27 refresh and resolution: The 165Hz 2K timing belongs to the iQOO 16 LEAD 2.0 panel, not to a Galaxy spec sheet.
- Pixel 11 stack: Seoul industry copy still names Pixel 11 as an M16 phone; the iQOO event billed the 16 as Android’s first.
- Privacy on two models: Whether the S26 Ultra calibration bugs stay gone once the same idea rides on M16 is untested.
Until those blanks close, the honest read of M16 on Galaxy is a 2027 material refresh, not a 2026 brightness crown.
The Chinese Panel Talks That Collapsed
Cost still hangs over the S27 screens. In June 2026, TM Roh, president of Samsung Electronics, was due in China while the phone group weighed BOE OLED for the base Galaxy S27, a first for the S series if it had happened. Samsung Display, which is both a sister company and the line’s usual supplier, pushed back. The talks ended. BOE stopped work on a Galaxy S27 panel after the request for information went nowhere.
The S27 and S27+ still get a cheaper stack than the Pro and Ultra. They just get a cheaper Samsung Display stack, M14 instead of M16, rather than a Chinese panel. The phone group wanted to cut the bill. The display group wanted the volume. The display group won the vendor fight and still sold M16 to Apple and iQOO first.
Foldables Wait Until Late 2027
The same delay repeats on the folding line. Galaxy Z Flip 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra are on M13, the mix Samsung has used on Z phones from 2024 through 2026. Galaxy Z Flip 9, Galaxy Z Fold 9, and Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra are expected to move to M16 in the second half of 2027, after the S27 pair has already used it for most of a year.
THE M16 CALENDAR
- 2024 to 2026: Galaxy S base models and the Z series stay on M13. Galaxy S26 Ultra introduces M14, COE, and Privacy Display.
- March 2026: Red-tint reports start on some S26 Ultra units.
- June 2026: BOE’s Galaxy S27 panel work stops. Samsung Display remains the S27 supplier.
- August 2026: Pixel 11 series launches. Seoul industry copy later lists it with M16; that claim is still disputed.
- August 4 and August 26, 2026: Samsung offers free S26 Ultra calibration, then an over-the-air color fix.
- September 9, 2026: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max debut with M16. The iPhone Duo uses it too.
- September 14, 2026: Samsung Display and iQOO show a 10,000-nit local-peak M16 panel for iQOO 16.
- First quarter 2027: Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra are due on M16. Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ are due on M14.
- Second half 2027: Galaxy Z Flip 9, Z Fold 9, and Z Fold 9 Ultra are expected on M16.
By the time a Galaxy S27 Ultra reaches a shop, M16 will have been on an iPhone and on a Chinese Android flagship through a whole holiday season. What Samsung can still sell is the rest of the stack, COE and Privacy Display on a newer emissive mix, if the color mapping that failed on some S26 Ultra units holds the second time.
