13 Arrested as Police Smash Lyons Crime Empire in Dawn Raids

Scottish and Spanish police struck at the heart of one of Britain’s most notorious crime families in a dramatic pre-dawn operation, arresting 13 people and dealing a heavy blow to the Lyons network.

Eight men were seized in Scotland and five more detained on the Costa del Sol as officers executed simultaneous warrants in a two-year international investigation into drug trafficking, money laundering and serious organised crime.

This was the biggest single hit against the Lyons group in years.

How the Raids Unfolded

At 04:30 on a cold, wet morning in Lanarkshire, armed officers wearing balaclavas smashed into luxury homes while neighbours slept.

In Motherwell, Bellshill, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld and Glasgow, doors were forced and suspects dragged from their beds.

Hundreds of miles away in Malaga and Barcelona, Guardia Civil teams carried out identical raids under warmer skies, with Scottish detectives watching on.

Detective Chief Inspector George Calder, who led the Scottish side, said the operation had been months in the planning.

“We are targeting individuals at the highest level of this organisation,” he told reporters outside Motherwell police station.

“These people believe they are untouchable because they live abroad or hide behind legitimate businesses. Today shows they are not.”

A viral, hyper-realistic YouTube thumbnail with a dark, cinematic crime drama atmosphere. The background is a rain-slicked Scottish housing estate at 4am mixed with golden Costa del Sol sunrise, dramatic police floodlights cutting through darkness with swirling blue lights. The composition uses a low-angle dramatic shot to focus on the main subject: a shattered luxury front door with police boot prints and a seized gold Rolex lying on wet pavement. Image size should be 3:2.
The image features massive 3D typography with strict hierarchy:
The Primary Text reads exactly: 'LYONS EMPIRE FALLS'. This text is massive, the largest element in the frame, rendered in molten gold chrome to look like a high-budget 3D render.
The Secondary Text reads exactly: '13 ARRESTED'. This text is significantly smaller, positioned below the main text. It features a thick, glowing red border/outline (sticker style) to contrast again

Who Are the Lyons Crime Family?

The Lyons network, originally based in Glasgow and North Lanarkshire, rose to become one of Scotland’s dominant serious crime groups over the last two decades.

Led by brothers Steven and Martin Lyons (both now deceased), the family became infamous for extreme violence and ruthless control of the drugs trade.

Key moments in their history:

  • 2006: Eddie Lyons Snr murdered in Glasgow
  • 2010: Steven Lyons shot seven times but survived
  • 2017: Jamie Daniel (close ally) gunned down
  • 2023: Mark Lyons (29) and Ryan Fitzsimmons (33) assassinated on Costa del Sol

Despite the deaths of its leaders, police say the organisation continues under new management, laundering millions through property, car washes and cryptocurrency.

What Police Found

Officers seized:

  • £200,000 in cash
  • Luxury watches worth £150,000
  • Designer clothes and jewellery
  • Encrypted phones
  • Documents linked to money laundering

Detectives believe the network was moving up to £10 million a year through Spanish property and Scottish businesses.

One source told BBC Scotland: “They thought the Costa del Sol was their safe haven. It’s not anymore.”

Why This Operation Matters

Detective Calder stressed the raids were the result of a two-year intelligence-led investigation and are not connected to last year’s double murder of Mark Lyons and Ryan Fitzsimmons in Spain.

“That was a separate feud,” he said. “This is about dismantling the entire structure, not settling scores.”

The National Crime Agency praised the “outstanding cooperation” between Police Scotland, Guardia Civil and Europol.

NCA Director Graeme Biggar said: “Scottish crime groups have caused misery across the UK and Europe for too long. Today’s arrests show nowhere is safe if you’re involved in serious organised crime.”

The Human Cost

Behind the headlines are shattered communities.

In North Lanarkshire towns like Coatbridge and Bellshill, families have lived in fear of the Lyons name for years.

One local resident, speaking anonymously, said: “Young ones look up to them because they drive flash cars and wear Rolexes. But it’s all built on poisoning our kids with drugs.”

A mother whose son died from a heroin overdose last year added: “I hope this is the beginning of the end. These people have blood on their hands.”

The 13 arrested men are expected to appear in court next week. Charges are likely to include directing serious organised crime, drug supply and money laundering offences that carry potential life sentences.

For the communities blighted by their activities, today’s raids brought a rare moment of hope.

As one officer put it while loading seized luxury goods into a police van: “This is what justice looks like at 4am.”
