On November 5, 2024, SSEN Transmission submitted a pivotal planning application for the Netherton Hub to Aberdeenshire Council, marking a significant milestone in Scotland’s transition to a cleaner, more secure energy future. The Netherton Hub, strategically located near Longside, west of Peterhead, is poised to play a central role in facilitating the transfer of renewable energy across the UK.
A Strategic Location for Clean Energy
The Netherton Hub will consist of a 400kV substation designed for both offshore and onshore electricity generation, as well as a 132kV substation intended for future generation and storage connections. Additionally, two high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations will be installed to enable the efficient transfer of renewable energy from Scotland to demand centres across the UK.
The site has been chosen for its proximity to existing and planned infrastructure, which, coupled with access to key transport routes, will facilitate the development and expansion of Scotland’s energy network. The Netherton Hub will also feature a transmission hall for future network expansion and facilities dedicated to operations and spare parts storage.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
The planning application is the result of over two years of careful development, including extensive consultations with the local community and stakeholders. More than 400 individuals participated in face-to-face meetings, and over 100 formal responses were received regarding the proposals. This feedback has been incorporated into the project to ensure that the hub will meet both energy needs and local community expectations.
Contributing to Energy Security and Job Creation
The Netherton Hub is set to play a key role in enhancing Scotland’s energy security while supporting the country’s ambitious clean power goals. The project is also expected to bring economic benefits to the local area, including the creation of jobs and the stimulation of the local economy.
As part of SSEN Transmission’s Pathway to 2030 investment programme, the Netherton Hub is a vital piece of infrastructure that will support Scotland’s long-term energy plans. The £20 billion ($25.93 billion) programme aims to significantly bolster infrastructure across northern Scotland, ensuring that the country remains at the forefront of renewable energy development.
The Path Forward
With the submission of the planning application, the Netherton Hub is one step closer to becoming a reality. The successful development of this project will contribute to Scotland’s ongoing efforts to meet its renewable energy targets, support energy security, and create sustainable economic opportunities for communities in the region.
