Twitch Dates GTA 6 Multiplayer While Rockstar Stays Quiet
Dan Clancy put GTA 6 multiplayer in 2027 after talks with Rockstar, while Take-Two still describes November 19 as a single-player console launch.
Twitch chief executive Dan Clancy said GTA 6 multiplayer will arrive in 2027, after talks with Rockstar about its creators. Rockstar has not dated an online mode, named one, or listed a PC version.
On September 17, 2026, the same day Clancy spoke, Take-Two Interactive told shareholders that Grand Theft Auto VI launches as a single-player game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox.
A Two-Year Clock on GTA 6
Clancy was in Japan for the Tokyo Game Show, talking about how a Rockstar launch will move people onto Twitch, including viewers who have not logged in for a long time. He was not doing a product briefing. He was describing the calendar his platform is building around the game.
He said Twitch had already spent a lot of time with the studio, including on how creators get pulled into the launch. Then he treated multiplayer as a second, larger event on that same clock.
We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators. You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.
Dan Clancy, CEO of Twitch, in an interview
Next year, from that September interview, is 2027. He did not give a month, a season, or a name for the mode. He also declined to size the first spike, saying it will lift overall viewership in a meaningful way and that he has no idea by how much.
A streaming chief is an odd messenger for a Rockstar date, and he is not the person who can lock one. What he can lock is Twitch’s own plan: two separate GTA 6 peaks, with the second one sold as bigger than the first. That is why the line travelled. It did not come from a stranger guessing on a podcast. It came from a company that says it has been in the room.
Take-Two Called November a Single-Player Launch
Hours later, Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two Interactive, sat on the publisher’s annual meeting of stockholders and answered a question about GTA Online. He did not date a GTA 6 online mode. He restated the product Take-Two has actually announced.
Just as a reminder, we have announced that we will be launching GTA VI on November 19th. It’s a single-player title and it’s being launched on Xbox and PS5.

Rockstar had already set to launch November 19, 2026 on a Thursday, after moving the game and asking for extra months of polish. The newswire promised Leonida and a return to modern-day Vice City. It did not mention multiplayer.
Asked whether the new game would carry repeat in-game spending at launch, Zelnick tied the answer to that single-player plan. “We’re launching GTA VI as a single player experience on two major platforms. Therefore, there’s no recurrent consumer spending anticipated with regard to this launch,” he said. Take-Two uses that phrase for virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases, and in-game ads.
He left a door open by repeating “this launch.” He did not close it. He also did not walk through a GTA 6 shark-card shop, a battle pass, or a priced online client, because none of those things has been announced.
14 Days Used to Be the Wait
Rockstar has split campaign and online before. It has never asked players to wait a calendar year in public, because it has never put a public year on GTA 6 multiplayer at all.
HOW ROCKSTAR TIMED THE LAST TWO ONLINE MODES
| Game | Campaign launch | Online launch | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA V | September 17, 2013 | October 1, 2013 | 14 days |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 26, 2018 | November 2018 public beta | About one month |
| GTA 6 | November 19, 2026 | 2027, per Dan Clancy | Not dated by Rockstar |
Leslie Benzies was president of Rockstar North when GTA Online was revealed. He said the studio could have shipped it with the campaign and chose not to. “We want it to be known as a different entity, a separate thing, and it’ll grow on its own. It’ll be GTA Online; it’s not part of GTA V,” he said at the time.
That two-week pause was the point. Players got a long story first. Online then arrived as its own character on the switch wheel, with a warning that it would keep changing. Red Dead Redemption 2 used the same idea on a slightly longer fuse, with a public beta in November 2018 after the October 26 campaign launch.
Clancy’s 2027 year, if Rockstar ever adopts it, would stretch that old habit from weeks into a second product year. Until the studio says so, the only dated GTA 6 product is still the November campaign.
What Happens to GTA Online After November?
The overlooked party in the 2027 chatter is the game already running. When a shareholder asked about GTA Online, Zelnick answered the existing service by name. “If the question is with regard to GTA V Online, that continues to be a robust business for us, and we will continue to support GTA V Online,” he said. He gave no end date.
That is not a courtesy line. Take-Two’s fiscal 2026, which ended March 31, 2026, posted $6.72 billion in net bookings, up 19% from $5.65 billion. Repeat in-game spending made up 78% of those bookings. Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto V were listed among the largest contributors, alongside NBA 2K and several mobile titles.
THE MONEY STILL COMING FROM THE LAST GTA
- $6.72 billion: Take-Two’s fiscal 2026 net bookings, with GTA Online and GTA V among the largest contributors.
- 78 percent: Share of those bookings that came from repeat in-game spending across the company.
- 230 million: GTA V units Zelnick said the 2013 game has sold, after 13 years as a top-five seller.
- $8.0 to $8.2 billion: Take-Two’s fiscal 2027 net bookings outlook, which it tied to the November 19 launch.
Anyone who planned to drop GTA Online on November 19 still has no named GTA 6 successor to move into. Rockstar has kept separate updates to GTA Online coming for years after the campaign that spawned it, and Zelnick just promised more of that support.
WHY THE LAST ONLINE GAME STILL MATTERS
- Still supported: Zelnick said Take-Two will keep supporting GTA V Online after GTA 6 ships.
- Still paying: The current online game remains in the publisher’s top bookings mix.
- No successor named: Rockstar has not announced a GTA 6 online mode, a price, or a player cap.
For Take-Two, that split is tidy. Fiscal 2027, the year ending March 31, 2027, is built around a boxed campaign. Zelnick said the company believes that year will set new records, driven by the November 19 launch, and the outlook sits at net bookings of $8.0 to $8.2 billion. An online mode dated only as “2027” by someone outside the company does not have to do any of that work on day one.
Other Studios Were Told to Clear the Holiday
Clancy’s other audience was every publisher trying to schedule around Rockstar. He said GTA 6 will likely face little serious competition for attention this holiday, and that staying out of its way is the right call. He also said the frenzy should run into January.
That warning had a second beat. Studios that skip November and wait for the heat to die may be waiting on the wrong fire. In Clancy’s telling, the bigger Twitch bump is the multiplayer year, not the campaign weekend. Publishers who parked a 2027 game in a “post-GTA 6” slot may find that slot still occupied.
Twitch’s incentive is plain. A single-player Vice City story will be clipped, raid-streamed, and hunted for secrets for weeks. An online mode, when it exists, is a live stage: heists, role-play servers, money routes, creator challenges, and the kind of daily show that keeps people parked on a channel. Clancy said the second bump would be larger. He would say that. It is also how GTA Online actually behaved after 2013, once the campaign stopped being the news.
He is allowed to plan for that. He is not allowed to ship it. By early October 2026, Rockstar still had not put a year of its own on a GTA 6 online mode, which is why Clancy’s sentence is still circulating as a date rather than as a footnote.
The Holes Rockstar Has Left Open
The holes are specific. Rockstar has not said that GTA 6 will have multiplayer. It has not said the mode will be called GTA Online. It has not said whether progress, money, or characters will carry over from the current service. It has not said PC.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The campaign date: Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox.
- The launch shape: Zelnick described that ship date as a single-player experience with no repeat in-game spending attached.
- The current online game: Take-Two said it will keep supporting GTA V Online.
- The Twitch year: Clancy said multiplayer launches next year, after talks with Rockstar about creator plans.
PC sits in a similar silence. Zelnick said the company’s usual path is to launch where a meaningful audience exists, and that “the PC platform is becoming more and more important to our company over time.” He did not attach that sentence to GTA 6. Take-Two’s own lineup for the game still names only the two consoles. GTA V reached PC in April 2015, more than a year and a half after its 2013 console debut, which is history, not a promise.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- A Rockstar date: 2027 is Clancy’s wording, not a studio window.
- The product: No online mode has been named, priced, or described in an official GTA 6 feature list.
- PC: No SKU, date, or hardware target has been announced.
- The handoff: No plan has been published for what happens to GTA V Online money, characters, or servers once a successor exists.
GTA 6 still opens on November 19, 2026, as a story set in Leonida. The 2027 multiplayer year belongs to a streaming calendar until Rockstar puts it on its own.
