The Scottish public has played a vital role in tackling crime, with a record 18,000 pieces of information submitted to Crimestoppers between March 31, 2023, and April 1, 2024. This marks the highest number of contacts in the charity’s 36-year history, showing a strong commitment to making communities safer.
Scotland’s Communities Drive Crimestoppers’ Success
Scotland’s communities continue to be at the core of Crimestoppers’ efforts. The surge in reports includes information submitted through the Fearless youth service, which empowers young people to speak up anonymously about crime.
This milestone is being celebrated with the charity’s annual impact campaign, backed by Network Rail Scotland. The initiative highlights the essential role of public trust in ensuring safety and reducing crime across the country.
Campaign Launch at Glasgow Central Station
To mark this achievement, Crimestoppers launched a nationwide campaign at Glasgow Central Station. Key figures attended the event, including Angela Parker, Crimestoppers’ National Manager for Scotland; Siobhian Brown, Minister for Community Safety and Victims; and Inness Keith, Health and Safety Director at Network Rail Scotland.
The campaign extends beyond Glasgow, with messages shared across social media and throughout railway stations across Scotland. Volunteers and partners will also be distributing thank-you cards and chocolates to acknowledge the public’s contribution.
Impact of Public Information on Crime Reduction
The impact of the public’s information is clear:
- 357 criminals were arrested and charged as a result of Crimestoppers reports.
- Two individuals were arrested and charged with murder or unlawful killings.
- Six wanted persons were tracked down and arrested.
- 61 drink and drug drivers were caught and charged.
Crimestoppers reports also led to the recovery of drugs with a street value of £6.5 million. These actions demonstrate how anonymous tips can lead to significant police interventions and safer communities.
Positive Outcomes Beyond Arrests
Beyond law enforcement actions, Crimestoppers’ efforts have led to nearly 1,000 (944) positive outcomes. These include referrals to health and social support agencies and interventions that prevent individuals from engaging in criminal activity.
By working together, Scotland’s public, Crimestoppers, and law enforcement agencies continue to create safer communities. As the campaign gains momentum, it serves as a reminder that every piece of information shared anonymously can make a real difference.
