Mourinho Risks Everything as Espí Saves Real Madrid
Carlos Espí’s 90+1 tap-in beat Elche 3-2 after Madrid wasted a two-goal lead, leaving Mourinho to gamble before the Atlético derby.
Carlos Espí tapped in at 90+1 as Real Madrid beat Elche 3-2 after blowing a two-goal lead. José Mourinho said he threw extra forwards on because a draw was not enough, and the visitors left Martínez Valero level on points with Barcelona.
The night still had the same hole the coach named afterwards. Madrid had the game at 2-0, did not finish it, and needed a tap-in in the first of four added minutes to stay in the title race before Sunday’s derby at Atlético Madrid.
Espí Wins It After Madrid Let Elche Back In
Mourinho’s side controlled the opening period at Martínez Valero on Tuesday, September 15, then spent the rest of the night trying to recover a lead it had already held. Thibaut Courtois started behind Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konaté, Dean Huijsen and Marc Cucurella, with Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde in midfield, Yan Diomande, Arda Güler and Vinícius Júnior ahead of Kylian Mbappé.
Elche goalkeeper Matías Dituro had already denied Mbappé from a Valverde cross when Güler’s long free kick, in the 25th minute, smashed the post, came off Dituro, and dropped in. The club recorded it as an own goal. Eight minutes later Diomande drove down the right and cut the ball back for Mbappé, who finished with his right foot for 2-0. Vinícius had a third blocked before the break, and Courtois pushed away a Tete Morente drive at the other end.
THE FIVE GOALS IN ELCHE
- 25th minute: Güler’s free kick hits the post and goes in off Dituro for 0-1.
- 33rd minute: Mbappé converts Diomande’s low cross for 0-2.
- 71st minute: Abiel Osorio heads Elche back into the match, 1-2.
- 83rd minute: Fernando Niño’s stabbed finish makes it 2-2.
- 90+1: Espí taps in after Mbappé is found in the box, 2-3.
Jesús Gil Manzano added four minutes. Elche, bottom of the league and still without a win, had already used the second half to turn a closed night into an open one, and Madrid only closed it again on the break.
Madrid Generated 3.56 xG, Then Lost the Match
The match log gave Real Madrid 3.56 expected goals against Elche’s 0.85, which is the volume of a rout. It was not a rout, because 20 shots produced only four on target, and three of the four big chances Madrid created were missed. Elche had 56 percent of the ball and 11 shots. Madrid had 44 percent and still needed a tap-in to win.
ELCHE 2-3 REAL MADRID, THE MATCH LOG
| Side | xG | Shots (on target) | Possession | Big chances |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elche | 0.85 | 11 (3) | 56% | 1 created, 0 missed |
| Real Madrid | 3.56 | 20 (4) | 44% | 4 created, 3 missed |
Vinícius, who had already been denied in the first half, was through again in the 64th minute and still did not score. Osorio’s header arrived seven minutes later. Niño, on as a substitute, made it 2-2 with a stabbed shot Courtois did not reach. Mourinho had already taken Güler and Vinícius off at 2-0, in the 67th minute, for Jude Bellingham and Brahim Díaz, because he could feel the game slipping. The equaliser still came.
Mbappé now has seven league goals in six games, and he still had to square the winner rather than take it himself. Diomande, booked in the fourth minute, lasted until the 92nd and left with his first Madrid assist. The winger did the running. The finishing, for an hour after the second goal, did not.
Mourinho Threw On Six Attackers Because a Draw Was Useless
When Niño equalised, Mourinho sent on Espí and Endrick in the 86th minute and went for the win. Denzel Dumfries later replaced Diomande. By then the shape was no longer a midfield. It was a bet.
THE SIX ATTACKERS ON THE PITCH
- Kylian Mbappé: Starter, scorer of the second goal, assist on the winner.
- Jude Bellingham: On at 67 minutes, started the last break down the left.
- Yan Diomande: Starter, first Madrid assist, still on the pitch at 90+1.
- Brahim Díaz: On at 67 minutes with Bellingham when the lead was still two.
- Carlos Espí: On at 86 minutes, finished the winner from close range.
- Endrick: On at 86 minutes with Espí as Madrid abandoned a holding pair.
The coach said a draw did nothing for him. He also said the same change that saved the night could have lost it, which is the whole point of putting six attacking players on a pitch that had already given the ball away.
With the changes at the end, I risked everything. We won, but we could have lost. We had to do it, because a draw isn’t enough.
José Mourinho, Real Madrid coach, Martínez Valero press room
He risked everything with the late changes after telling the room the problem was obvious. In games that look finished, he said, Madrid have three, four, five chances to kill the night and do not take them. Then the other side scores, and the stadium that was supposed to be quiet is loud again. He joked that nobody gets bored at Real Madrid. The line landed because the first half had been simple and the second half had not.
He gave Elche coach Martín Anselmi credit for changing shape and for having the nerve to chase the game. Tchouaméni and Valverde, he said, had been fine while Madrid were in control. The night had three faces: 2-0, 2-2, and then kill or be killed. The last face is the one he chose.
Two Late Winners in 26 Minutes, Still Behind Mbappé
Espí, a 21-year-old forward born in Tavernes de la Valldigna on July 24, 2005, is 1.94m and arrived from Levante on July 30 on a deal running to June 30, 2031, after Madrid paid a €25 million release clause. He wears 19. He still has not started a league match.
He has now scored decisive late goals in two away games, first at Espanyol on August 22, on his debut, and now at Elche. A spectacular overhead kick at Real Betis was ruled out. He has not been given more than the 10 minutes he received that first night in Barcelona. The pattern is the same: the starters leave a match open, and the tall sub is asked to end it.
ESPÍ’S REAL MADRID MINUTES
- The return: Two goals in 26 minutes across five appearances, a rate of 13 minutes per goal.
- The league: Four LaLiga games, all as a substitute, no starts.
- The Elche cameo: On in the 86th minute, scored at 90+1 from Mbappé’s square ball.
- The fee: €25 million to Levante, where he scored 11 league goals last season and won the under-23 award.
The club’s own account of the winner was simple: a break down the left, Bellingham to Mbappé to Espí, and a finish into an open net. That is the job he was bought to do. It is also the job Madrid keep needing him to do because the first XI will not put the game away.
Why Mourinho Will Not Start Espí Next to Mbappé
Mourinho was asked about the striker and answered with a compliment that was also a ceiling. Espí is motivated and useful, he said, and he has a problem in front of him, which is a player who is not a normal player. Playing the two of them together, the coach said, is not easy, because Madrid then lack typical wide players in a 4-4-2 and the side loses balance.
That is why the four- and five-minute bursts will keep happening. Espí is the closer for nights that have already gone wrong, not the partner for Mbappé on nights that are supposed to stay simple. Calling for him to start, which followed the winner as soon as the quotes landed, runs into the same tactical wall the coach just described. The sub who keeps winning points is the sub because the starting shape is built around one centre-forward, not two.
He made the same point about Güler, who had forced the opener from the free kick and then faded. Nobody is indispensable, Mourinho said. Vinícius had done good defensive work and got tired. Güler’s intensity dropped. Bellingham and Brahim were fresh, and those first two changes came at 2-0, when the coach could already smell the game getting away. The heavy artillery came later, after 2-2, and it worked. It worked because Elche, chasing a first win of the season, left the space Espí only needs once.
Barcelona Sit Level, With a Game in Hand
The win was Madrid’s fifth in six league matches, the only defeat a loss at Betis, and it moved Mourinho’s team onto 15 points, level with Barcelona. The difference is the extra game and the goal difference. Barcelona have played five, scored 21, and conceded four. Madrid have played six, scored 17, and conceded six.
LALIGA AFTER REAL MADRID’S SIXTH GAME
| Pos | Team | P | W-D-L | GD | Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Barcelona | 5 | 5-0-0 | +17 | 15 |
| 2 | Real Madrid | 6 | 5-0-1 | +11 | 15 |
| 3 | Real Betis | 5 | 4-0-1 | +1 | 12 |
| 4 | Deportivo Alavés | 6 | 3-1-2 | +5 | 10 |
| 5 | Atlético Madrid | 5 | 3-1-1 | +4 | 10 |
| 20 | Elche | 6 | 0-2-4 | -8 | 2 |
The LaLiga table after matchday 6 still had Barcelona’s home game with Racing Santander, on Wednesday, September 16 at Camp Nou, to come. A Barça win would restore the gap Mourinho had just closed. Elche stay on two points from six matches, 8 scored and 16 conceded, the only side without a victory.
Madrid had already beaten Rayo Vallecano 4-1 at the weekend and Inter in the Champions League, with Mbappé scoring three times across those two. The Elche night was the first time this run looked like a team that needed rescuing from itself.
The Metropolitano Is a Bad Place to Gift Control
Mourinho was asked whether the two goals he conceded worried him ahead of Sunday. He said the worry is not for Sunday alone, it is for every match. He likes his team to score, he said, three, four, except at Betis. He does not like giving the other side the run of the game. Elche’s goals, in his telling, were not freaks. Madrid handed over control, and Anselmi had the courage to take it.
He wants the players to rest. Wednesday, September 16 is a day off. He said he barely speaks in the dressing room after a night like this, and they will be back on Thursday. If Madrid play badly from the first minute to the 90th, the concern is huge. When they have long spells of high quality and pile up chances, then drop into a passive, waiting spell, that concerns him too. They won, so he gave them credit. He also said there is no explanation for the switch-off except that a match can look easy when it is not.
The next league game is the derby at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday, September 20, kickoff 16:15, matchweek 7. Atlético sit on 10 points from five matches. Mourinho signed through June 30, 2029, when he returned in June, 13 years after his first spell. He does not need a reminder that a 2-0 lead in a noisy Spanish ground is not a finished night. He said that himself, an hour after Espí had to prove it.
