Alistair Johnston shuts down Graeme Souness’ Celtic claim as he praises Rangers veterans

Rangers defender confident in title race

Alistair Johnston has dismissed Graeme Souness’ suggestion that Celtic have an edge over Rangers in the title race, as he praised the experience and leadership of his team-mates. The Canadian international said he does not pay attention to the noise and pressure from the media and fans, and instead focuses on his own performance and hobbies.

Souness, a former Rangers player and manager, claimed that Celtic suffered an “almighty blow” after failing to capitalise on Rangers’ loss to Motherwell, and that the Light Blues had a “great weekend” despite their defeat. He also questioned Celtic’s mentality and desire to defend their crown, saying they lacked the “b*******” for a fight.

Johnston, however, rejected Souness’ comments, and insisted that Rangers are ready for the challenge ahead. He said: “I don’t think that’s true at all. We have a lot of guys in the dressing room who have been in this situation before, who have won titles and trophies, who know what it takes to get over the line. They are the ones who are leading us and keeping us grounded.”

Rangers veterans inspire title belief

Johnston singled out three of his senior colleagues who have been instrumental in Rangers’ impressive season so far: Steven Davis, Allan McGregor, and Jermain Defoe. He said they have been setting the standards and the example for the rest of the squad, both on and off the pitch.

He said: “Steven Davis is unbelievable. He’s 36 years old and he’s playing every game, every minute, at such a high level. He’s so calm and composed on the ball, he dictates the tempo and the rhythm of the game. He’s a joy to play with and to watch.

“Allan McGregor is another one. He’s 39 years old and he’s still making world-class saves every week. He’s a big personality in the dressing room, he’s always vocal and demanding the best from everyone. He’s a winner and he shows it every time he plays.

“Jermain Defoe is 38 years old and he’s still scoring goals for fun. He’s a legend of the game, he’s scored over 300 goals in his career, he’s played for England, he’s played in the Premier League. He’s a great mentor for the young strikers, he’s always giving them advice and tips. He’s a great professional and a great person.”

Rangers remain focused on next game

Johnston said that despite the setbacks and the twists and turns of the title race, Rangers remain focused on their next game and their ultimate goal. He said that manager Steven Gerrard has instilled a winning mentality and a strong belief in the team, and that they are not taking anything for granted.

He said: “We know that every game is important, every point is vital. We can’t afford to slip up or lose concentration. We have to keep working hard, keep improving, keep playing our way. We have a lot of respect for Celtic, they are a great team and they have a great manager. We know they won’t give up easily.

“But we also have a lot of confidence in ourselves, we have a lot of quality and depth in our squad, we have a lot of hunger and desire to win. We have a great manager who has been there and done that as a player, who knows how to motivate us and prepare us for every game. He’s been fantastic for us and we want to repay him with the title.”

Johnston added that he is enjoying his time at Rangers, and that he feels at home in Glasgow. He said that he loves playing for the club and the fans, and that he hopes to stay for a long time.

He said: “I love it here, it’s a great club, a great city, a great atmosphere. The fans are amazing, they are so passionate and supportive, they make you feel like one of their own. I’m very happy and grateful to be here, and I hope to be here for many years to come.”
