A former Miss Scotland has been convicted of assaulting two security guards and racially abusing one of them during a drunken altercation at a rugby event, a court has heard.
Incident at Edinburgh City 7s Tournament
Lucy Thomson, 26, was attending the Edinburgh City 7s rugby tournament in June 2023 when she was involved in a physical confrontation with security staff. According to testimony at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, she bit security supervisor Andrew Okpaje and used a racial slur against him while being escorted out of the venue.
Another security guard, Alasdair Doolan, was also bitten during the altercation. Thomson, who was Miss Scotland at the time, was reportedly intoxicated and shouted, “Do you know who I am?” and “I’ve got so much money in my account,” as she resisted removal.
Security Guard’s Testimony
Mr. Okpaje, 26, described his shock at being attacked and racially abused. He recounted how he was called to remove Thomson and her sister from the premises after reports of their drunken behavior.
- He stated that Thomson physically resisted, biting his hand and later using the N-word against him.
- He described the experience as “horrible” and expressed disbelief at hearing such language directed at him.
- His colleague, Mr. Doolan, testified that he was also bitten during the struggle but did not personally hear the racial slur.
Thomson’s Defense Rejected by Court
Thomson denied all charges, claiming she was being mistreated by security staff and had only consumed a moderate amount of alcohol. She alleged that her sister was “cornered” by security and that she was “struck from behind” before being forcibly removed from the premises.
However, Sheriff Derek O’Carroll dismissed her version of events as “utterly implausible” and found her guilty on all charges.
Social Media Fallout and ‘Dethroning’
Footage of the incident circulated on social media, leading to widespread condemnation. The Miss Scotland Wikipedia page was updated to state that she had been “dethroned” following the scandal. Although Thomson insisted she voluntarily relinquished the title in September 2023, organizers have stated otherwise.
A fine of £790 was imposed, to be paid within two months.
Background and Charity Work
Thomson, crowned Miss Scotland in July 2022, had been active in charity work. In 2020, she founded the BRAvery Trust, a non-profit organization focused on donating menstrual products and bras to those in need. However, her public image has taken a significant hit due to the conviction.
