In an innovative approach to addressing dietary health, a coalition of organizations in Scotland has unveiled DONE Meals, a new range of frozen meals designed to help consumers easily consume five portions of fruits and vegetables in a single serving. This initiative, backed by the Healthier Product Innovation Fund, aims to tackle the challenge of incorporating adequate produce into daily diets—a task that has proven difficult for many.
A Fresh Take on Dietary Recommendations
The concept behind DONE Meals emerged from the recognition that many individuals struggle to meet the recommended five portions of fruits and vegetables daily. While some organizations have lowered their expectations, accepting any intake of produce as a success, the team behind DONE chose to embrace the challenge head-on.
Paul Mason, Co-founder and Creative Director of DONE, expressed his excitement about the project: “I was delighted when I realised it was possible to get all five portions of veg or fruit into a single, delicious meal. We understand that doing what you can, when you can—little bits here and there—can make a massive difference to our dietary health. That’s where DONE comes in. If we can help people save time, eat well, and ultimately feel better, that’ll be job done for us.”
Nutritious and Flavorful Offerings
DONE Meals are not only packed with vitamins and nutrients but are also designed to be a culinary delight. The range features a variety of dishes, including:
- Vietnamese Ragu Ga
- Smoked Chipotle Chilli (available in both beef and vegan versions)
- Vegan Moroccan Tagine
- Tortiglioni Bolognese
- Brisket Beef Bourguignon
- Chicken and Chorizo Estofado
By freezing the meals, the producers ensure that all nutrients are preserved while providing a convenient option for consumers looking to enhance their vegetable intake.
Addressing Dietary Shortfalls
The Healthier Product Innovation Fund aims to encourage the creation of healthier food products while educating consumers about nutrition. Joanne Burns, Reformulation for Health Manager at FDF Scotland, highlighted the importance of such initiatives: “Most people fall 11 portions short of the recommended weekly intake of fruits and vegetables. These five-a-day ready meals can help provide the boost that many need. The success of this project and the wider Healthier Product Innovation Fund proves the importance of continued funding for innovative academic partnership projects to improve the health of Scotland’s products and people.”
Availability and Future Plans
DONE Meals are currently available for purchase via donefood.co.uk and can be shipped within EH post codes, with plans to expand to additional areas on a weekly basis. This initiative not only supports healthier eating habits but also reinforces the commitment to innovation within Scotland’s food industry.
